After moving to the Hartford area from New York, I had been missing having good Ethiopian food nearby. While the excellent Lalibela is only a short drive away in New Haven, it is still a bit of a haul just for dinner. Fortunately, some of the best Ethiopian food available in the states is right here in Hartford next to the also great Monte Alban Mexican restaurant on Farmington Ave in the West End.
For the uninitiated, Ethiopian entrees are stewed and soft in consistency and scooped up with a soft sourdough flatbread called injera. There are numerious vegetarian entrees, chicken (doro), lamb (yebeg) and fish dishes. The "alcha" dishes are mild and the "wot" dishes are spicy and tailored to your taste.
The restaurant is family run and the proprietors are more than eager to explain the menu and help you find a dish suited to your taste in a low-pressure fashion.
If you're in the mood for something different, given Abyssinian a try! [18 Nov 2006 11:09:59]

Great food, great service Well, I am not very experienced in Ethiopian Food, but a couple months ago I was in NYC and a friend took me to a very famous Ethiopian restaurant and I loved it. Then I decided to look for one in the area I live and the closest one was Abyssinian (~1h drive). Anyways, it's worth every single mile!!! The food is amazing, the service was also great. I've been there with my wife and 2 friends and we all loved it. If you're not sure what to eat, ask the owner for some recommendations... and they'll bring a little bit of everything (he first asks what kind of food you eat/like) and in different 'levels of spice'. Really delicious!!! I'll definetely come back very soon. [31 Aug 2007 00:04:30]
