Description

Located near McPherson Square, Cafe Mozart is a lounge and deli in addition to being one of the few German restaurants in the metro area. Though unimpressive in decor, the food is genuine and available in smaller portions on request. It happily accepts the patronage of downtown office workers, for whom it sponsors a daily happy hour from 4 to 7pm, as well as the occasional German expatriate in the mood for native wursts, salads, and pastries. Special opera and Cabaret nights are held monthly.

Opera Nite Fun
Went to an Opera Nite at Cafe Mozart. Enjoyed the performers and the food was excellent. Would suggest to put up a screen to quiet the noise coming from the bar.    [02 Sep 2004 10:48:00]

Great Opera/Cabaret Night
Went to see Opera Cabaret Nighr with soprano Sally Martin and tenor Michael Blaney. Wonderful evening. The entertainment was outstanding and the food and service was excellent! Do this more than once a month!    [06 Jul 2005 11:00:10]

Great German Food and Deli
OK, everyone likes the monthly Opera night. And, by the way, they have live entertainment nearly every night. But what no one else has mentionned is that the food itself is excellant.

The restaraunt is a bit deceiving, because it has a relatively small front opening on the city sidewalk and you enter through their delicatessen - which is full of freshly made German meats, salads, pastries, and such as well as imported packaged goods. You have to walk all the way through to find the entrance to their bar, and from there walk all the way back to get to the restaurant. Its not a place people stumble into casually - you must know where are going.

OK, so once inside, you find that its a well-appointed, comfortable, and quiet dining room. This is the main dining room, where you'll get opera and other entertain with your dinner. There is also a smaller room nearer the front for private parties and "overflow".

The menu has a large variety of items, and while I haven't tried them all, those I have were quite good. I've also been there with a large group for a business luncheon, and everyone was very impressed - even those that don't normally favor German cuisine. I don't think there is a bad meal on the menu - its just a matter of what you prefer.

On Opera night, you'll need reservations for sure. Other times, its more likely you can be seated without a reservation for dinner - but that might mean in the "overflow" room.

Parking is a bit of a problem. DC is crowded, and you may need to go around the block to find a space on the street or a nearby garage. It is just a couple blocks north of Metro Center station on the subway, and for many that might be the best bet.    [19 May 2006 11:44:34]
