Last of the old-style German restaurants This place is pretty neat. The food is authentic old-world German cuisine, and quite good. Particularly good is their Hirsch (stag, or venison) which is available during the Game-Food festival. The place is decorated much like a typical Stube or restaurant/pub in Germany would be, lots of dark woods and funny plaques and so forth. There's a large piano, and fairly often a blind gentleman who is very good will play during dinner. More rowdy crowds will usually be seated downstairs, which in my experience has always been a lot of fun. Beer is served in regular (though large) size glasses, or 1-Liter "Mass" mugs - these are the same size/type one would get at Oktoberfest or other German/Austrian beerfests.
Overall, I really like this place, though it can be a bit pricey. [23 Oct 2003 09:51:25]

Disappointing Service Went twice years ago, since it was nearby. Food was basic, sturdy Teutonic fare. But service on the second visit was terrible, downright rude. We have a policy, for every transgression, the usually generous tip, 20% or more (I used to wait tables), gets whittled down a dollar at a time. As a result, no tip was was left and we never returned. Ambience is Schwartzvald-kitschy, think Blue Angel, but tired. [02 Jan 2004 05:00:24]

Good German Food A good German restaurant is getting harder and harder to find in this area. Fortunately, this has always been one of the best.
Its a little pricey, but not for the area. Figure $30 per person for a full dinner. There is a live entertainment (piano) on Friday and Saturday nights, too. It is authentic first rate German cuisine. You can tell by the patrons: lots of diners are of German ancestry. There's good variety, and everything seems to be equally good. Even some dishes I'm usually not too fond of turn out quite good when served here.
Every now and then they have special meals and seasonal dishes - like roast goose for Christmas. And unlike some restaurants that serve "holiday" meals from a substitute chef, the holidays here are actually extra good.
Service is excellent, too. Its a crowded area, and space is at a premium in the dining room, but its never been a problem. The old-world decor helps make the experience enjoyable even though I've seen it many times before.
I have often tried finding a new place to eat in th earea, but end up coming back to this one - and have never been sorry. Every meal I've ever had in this restaurant has been delightful and delicious. [15 May 2006 16:12:52]
