Mexican favorites get gourmet treatment - AOL City Guide, Amanda McClements; Sipping a frozen pomegranate margarita in front of the shimmering blue wall of water at Rosa Mexicano makes you feel a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of DC. But this vacation requires hardly any travel. - suggest change

$100 and a bottle of Kaopectate Rosa Mexicano has a beautiful ambience, however the restaurant has bent the rules for "Mexican" food. Coming from Arizona, I was especially excited to try the dishes. First disappointment: Italian water at a Mexican restaurant. 2nd disappointment: the pomegranate margarita had no specific pomgegranate taste (albeit strong). 3rd disappointment: the mushroom quesadillas tasted like a wet sponge with a hint of salt. Then, the portion for the community frijoles and lemon-rice was a bit scant. My friend's dish, spinach chile relleno, albeit creative, needed more goat cheese to bring out the variety. Last but not least, my dish, chicken enchiladas, was interesting... until the next day. In other words, the hefty check was not the only price I had to pay. Tequila's in Philly, you have no competition here in DC! [21 Feb 2004 10:23:32]

Good food. Bad service. I went to the Washington location of Rosa Mexicano last night and it was a mixed bag: good food with lousy service.
The tiled wall and sheetrock ceiling made for good decore, but the sound level they produced made conversation difficult.
The tortilla soup, pork pibil and filet mignon were all well-prepared and I recommend them all. The beef was cooked medium rare, just as requested. But the entries were served while I was still eating my soup, with no apology or other indication from the server that he was doing something wrong. When my cup of coffee was brought to me, there was a large puddle of coffee sitting in the saucer. We ordered one dessert, but were charged for a different, more expensive one (probably by accident, but it annoyed me just the same).
On several occasions I've been to the Rosa Mexicano in NYC, where I live, and found the same problem there. If you're looking for good real Mexican (not Taco Bell tex-mex) food, and you can put up with the service, it's worth considering. [22 Mar 2005 16:48:53]
