We like go here for lunch. The lunch menu and daily special is reasonably priced (~$5.00). The food is very good, fresh, and good size portion. I had been to Chevy's in Jacksonville and had essentially the same thing that I normally get at El Toro. Chevy's was smaller portion, almost double in price, and tasted like it was warmed over.
Plus El Toro's salsa and chips (provided gratis with entree order) is better than Chevy's and On The Border's.
El Toro is definitely recommended for lunch. I have not tried their dinner menu, but it should be good also.
My only real criticism is that the past few times we've been there for lunch, the air conditioning has been turned up too high. Take a sweater or flannel shirt. It might be not that bad in the height of summer and if our office wasn't already well air-conditioned. [24 May 2002 09:29:31]

Good stuff for lunch Rapidly served, good inexpensive food. The best chips and salsa in town. Good service, and an owner who will generally remember your face if not your name. Highly recommended. [10 Oct 2002 13:33:30]

Unacceptable! Food tasted processed. The sweet tea was weak. Uncle Ben's has better "instant" rice, and I've eaten better "frozen" enchiladas. This was the absolutely worst meal I've ever eaten. I'm sorry to have mistaken it with Ocala's "El Toreo." Similar names do not mean similar food!!! [07 Jun 2003 21:20:03]

El Toro Rocks! I don't live in Gainesville anymore but every time I come back to visit I stop by to grab a bag of chips and salsa. The price of the average meal cant be beat! The service is great and i have never left unhappy. When I do have time to stop in I usually get the Mariachi's (which is chicken and cheese wraped in a tortilla and fried then topped with lto sour cream and guacamole. On the side comes with chicken on skewers. Dont try to eat the whole thing though. You might explode!(large serving). [22 Apr 2004 19:47:43]

Outstanding Tex/Mex in Gainesville, FL Owner/Manager is helpful and attentive. The food is good traditional Tex/Mex. The portions are substantial. Free, delicious salza, queso sauce and chips. The prices are modest. Extremely unfortunately, no Mole'--major dissappointment! [05 Oct 2006 16:04:31]
