Although striving to be upscale, Arthur's location in a midrange hotel deceives it. With typical unimaginative furnishings and decor, and average service, Arthur's suceeds only by being in a town which is not known for the sophistication of its restaurants.
Service was strained as wait staff referred to diners with questions such as, "You guys want coffee?" and, rather than simply and unobtrusively pouring more wine asked if we did, in fact, want more wine poured. More telling was the habit of bringing those folding tray stands to the side of the tables when clearing. The service was upscale for a diner.
Fortunately, the food was excellent. Although straining to present 1980s California cuisine, and coming somewhat close, the throwback menu was interesing. To me, the Lobster Cobbler sounded intriguing but I was informed that it was much too sweet for a main course and had actually been taken off the menu a few days before. The substitute seafood "medley" over angel hair was good, even if it was drowned in sun dried tomatoes. My wife enjoyed the pork chop (advertised at 9 ounces but in reality more of 5 to 6, but still sufficient) and the superb garlic mashed potatoes. Portions were large so we didn't sample the appetizers or dessert, the latter being seen at other tables and were huge, diner style.
Overall we will probably not go back as we live in the same town and there are better places, but the traveling businessperson would not be disappointed (although a short walk to the main highway will bring them to a dozen better places). [20 Jan 2002 07:52:53]
