Hungry Heron
This is one of my favorite restaurants on Sanibel! The food is wonderful and the atmosphere is peaceful, yet fun. If you are going to be on the island on a weekend, the breakfast buffet is a must! You can make your own waffles, and there is a great selection from biscuits, bacon, and eggs to the best eclairs in the world.    [02 Jul 2002 16:34:06]

This was our third time eating at the Hungry Heron and it never fails to satisfy. The service was quick. The food arrived shortly afterwards. The portion sizes here are huge. Everything tasted good. I don't think you can go wrong here.

They have a television turned on to cartoons to keep the kids occupied, but with the sound turned down so it doesn't bother the adults. It's just a nice friendly place.    [05 Jul 2003 19:47:34]

Special: anole tale
My husband and I went here for lunch a few months back (I only this moment found this web link). This was our 3rd visit. We had liked our dining experience the first time, although the place is very "campy". We were not so impressed the 2nd time, but it was okay......our waitress was absolutely the worst ever.
Third time is the charm, they say. There was a lizard tail in my husband's water glass. Truly, I cannot make this up. The waitress seemed annoyed that we would bother her for such a thing, took the glass away, and brought another glass of water (in the same glass? who knows.). No form of apology, no crediting our bill, no manager with overzealous "I'm SO sorry" - NOTHING.
We were so grossed out - we left.
Not only does this place need a complete make over, a new (professional, trained, something above the lady who sells tickets at the local bus station) wait staff - but the health department needs to shut this place DOWN until it cleans up its act.    [15 Jan 2004 20:23:58]

Nice place and food is good
In the season it's hard to get in, but if you do, it's worth the wait. One problem is the no-seeums will eat you alive in the summer if you have to wait on the porch.    [16 Jul 2004 14:50:33]

One of our favorites
We make it a must to eat at least one dinner here each time we are visiting the island. We usually call in our order to go so we can bring it back to our condo and eat with an ocean view. I have found no other place that serves better sweet potato fries than Hungry Heron. Even with our meals being takeout, the items that normally would be a mess once you got them home (mostly steamed seafood entrees) are always just as good as if they had just been brought from the kitchen. The salads are huge. The honey mustard dressing is highly recommended.    [09 Mar 2007 12:07:29]
