What an apt motto for this eclectic treasure in Tallahassee, Florida. Kool Beanz serves up a variety of modern American dishes with an ethnic twist. The atmosphere is fun and fiesty, and patrons are encouraged to have a good time. This place is a no-frills, easy going spot with excellent food and service. Disappointed But May Give It Another Chance.
I was really looking forward to dinner at Kool Beanz. Unfortunately, the evening I was there the eatery did not fulfill its potential.

Service was spotty, with a waiter I'm sure meant well but just couldn't focus, it seemed. I fully respect the place's motto--Eat, Drink and Talk Loud...You're Among Friends!--but it was just loud, not pleasant.

The dishes were so-so. The hummus was unspectacular, the black bean cakes the same. The salsa was better than the star of the dish, actually. My companion found her lamb dish to be unimpressively flavored though the lamb itself was very good.

Similarly, our desserts were not stand outs. I had a mousse that was so lightly flavored that it seemed like I was spooning plain whipped cream into my mouth. Also, it took FOREVER for the waitstaff to get my dining companion's slice of cake plated and served. We know because you can watch all the kitchen activity from where we sat.

For the price, Kool Beanz was a disappointment, although the variety of intriguing dishes may mean I'll try it again someday.    [29 Jul 2004 10:39:47]
