budget chinese Very popular with locals, in business for many years. Low prices good food, huge portions - Bert's special is about 1/2lb. each of lemon chicken & shar siu and about 4 cups pork fried rice for $6.25. The building leaves much to be desired, a rundown old gas station. (I usually order from the takeout window). [21 Oct 2004 16:43:40]

Hutch
In Pahoa, Hawaii? Don't miss Bert's. I would give this place more stars than Hutch did. All the dishes are Chinese inspired with a unique, delicate, fruity Puna flavor. The portions are, as he said, more than ample. Combine this with the price, and you have a keeper. Pahoa's "finest" places are not as sensual, authentic, or as cheap. (With the exception of the old Filipino Huli Huli Chicken guy. Just ask any local for directions to THIS exotic culinary treasure). Bert's has PERFECT ambiance, if you want a REAL Chinese/Hawaiian family business feel. It doesn't have to pretend. Pretense is out of place in Puna. [21 Jan 2007 23:30:32]
