Great Food In A Hectic And Noisy Atmosphere. Rich and tasty Pacific Rim flavors beckon visitors with a large and varied menu which features many creative appetizers, salads, eclectic mini-pizzas, dim sum morsels, freshest fish and meats. Many wonderful desserts too. Alas, the wines are over-priced with the list heavily dominated by Roy's special house brands. The very limited wine list, is dismaying to wine lovers. Order the Chocolate Volcano 15 - 20 minutes ahead. Restaurant setting is pleasant but the relentless noise and constant activity reduce one's chance of a fine dining experience. Also the well trained wait staff is too busy, so they are a less available than one would expect in an up market restaurant. [28 Jan 2000 23:15:57]

Good food, POOR service My husband and I recently dined at Roy's in Poipu--we had dinner there once in 2002, and really enjoyed that meal, so, this last visit, we were expecting a very nice experience.
That, unfortunately, was NOT the case.
The food was very good (although my fish was a little dry)--what was so bad was our waiter--and the service he provided (or rather, did not provide).
To be fair--the dinner started out ok--waiter was attentive and very enthusiastic.
Then, a (what I have to assume) local celebrity/politician/big-wig with his girl-friend sat down at the table next to us. Immediately our waiter proceeded to completely ignore us, and 2 of his other tables, and hover over this new arrival (ie.kiss-a**).
We had ordered wine with our dinner--it came so late that we had to send the food back (it was cold by the time the food came). I could go on and on--I was very tempted to tip one penny, but reluctantly settled on an 8% tip (which, in retrospect, was way too much). Keep in mind, I'm a person who almost always tips at least 15% (20% for excellent service).
When we left, the waiter was gabbing/joking with the bigwig--he never said goodby to us--thanks for your business, or anything. Earlier, when delivering the reheated food, he just glared at us, as if somehow our request was unreasonable.
Now, that's just not the spirit of Aloha that I was expecting from Roy's.
Roy needs to stress to his wait staff that a working person's money is every bit as green as the hoi-poloi--and every customer is to be given the best of service.
Not just the local mover and shaker who can do you a favor. Hopefully, this was just one bad waiter--and not representative of the restraurant.
We will be returning to the restaurant--give it another chance. But I was VERY disappointed with this most recent visit. We should have stayed at the condo, and grilled some hot-dogs, and opened a can of Campbell's soup--we would have had a much more enjoyable time. [14 Dec 2004 00:06:15]
