racism
I attempted to order a pizza for delivery but when I called back to find out why it was taking so long I was told that I could not order because of my neighborhood. I was specifically told that because I live around "those people" they did not want my business. I live in the Drake area. Expensive, but good
One large and one medium came to $36. It took an hour to get here too, but I live out in West Des Moines. Their sausage and pepperoni pizza was the best I've ever had though.    [12 Sep 2005 21:29:51]

Re: Racism
I live in the Drake neighborhood and I can get pizza delivered to my house. So I'm not sure what your talking about dude. Maybe it's just about safety.

I know some of the Limke family and they are far from racist.

What side of Drake do you live on? Maybe your part of the Drake neighborhood is too dangerous. That's why they closed the Pizza Hut on Forest years ago remember? Ya know the traffic cop shop now? I wouldn't take it too personal.

The service is RUDE
I attempted to order a pizza for delivery from a cell phone since I have no landline and because it was a long distance number they would not deliver to me although they had previous times. When I attempted to understand this policy they hung up on me after raising their voice implying that I didn't know what I was talking about. Definitely one of the best pizza Des Moines has to offer, so don't let the neon "lousy service" sign in the window or other reviews put you off. I've never had any problems with Big Tomato. I order delivery at least once a week, and I get my pizza in 20 min, 45 min on weekends. probably because I tip well - I work in a restaurant. The late night slices are great. There are huge crowds on the weekend, especially when the weather is nice. My friend Amy did the painting inside.

Try the big tomato special (white sauce, tomato, basil)
I like to add canadian bacon or asparagus also

Resiliently happy to be mediocre
Big Tomato is known for its midnight slices for barflies and cops. Perhaps they should the become a full time slice place, because, they are an AMAZING slice place. Otherwise, quite frankly, they are one of the most terrible delivery/pick-up pizza joints ever. And I've lived in five states and ten cities -- they Big Tomato is the worst in terms of consistency and customer service. Quite gingerly, on every front (from drivers to phone receptionists), they pride themselves on alienating their regular customers. I've ordered a pizza after a late night of teaching and received a large pizza, when I ordered a small, and was told by the deliveryman that I had to pay for the large or "screw you." This was said at my front door. Classy. An utterly cavalier business practice which suggest to me, a front. But, when the pizza is great, it's great. And when it's not great, well, I might very well find the vestiges of a broken bong sprinkled against green peppers and pepperoni.

Only go there when you are in line with ATF, frat boy, and divorcees -- the best pizza is served by the slice. Otherwise, go to Michael's for full pizza takeout -- nice people, efficient, and good pizza.    [03 Sep 2007 22:37:31]
