DON'T EAT HERE!
I would never recommend this place. The last several times that my family and I ate there they have constantly harassed us. The lady behind the bar always is rude to us, and she overcharges us almost every time we go in there. Last time we were there she and another waitress (not our waitress) conversed near the bar, and then the waitress approached out table, and very rudely accused us of slander about her having HIV, etc. There must of been someone eaves dropping on our conversation and not have gotten the actual story to get that out of our conversation. This place will no longer get my business. It is the worst place to eat in all of southeast Iowa.    [08 Mar 2004 22:21:37]

Eat Here!
Vel's has become an institution in Fort Madison and for good reason. Good food, served hot, and for prices that will leave your wallet as full as your stomach. Service has always been friendly, sometimes a bit rushed when they are packed at dinnertime but never rude. Ambiance is likewise OK, although I could do without the long 'communal seating' tables in the middle of the second dining room... again only a problem when they are packed.

Is Vel's perfect? No. But I challenge you to find another restaurant where you can feed (and then some!) a party of four adults with real food, including drinks and tip, for under $30. Yes, $30.

Inexpensive, traditional Mexican dishes served hot in an unpretentious atmosphere. I no longer live in Fort Madison, but Vel's always gets a visit when I'm back in town.    [23 Jun 2007 07:30:37]
