Description
Small town main street with sewing stores and savings and loans also holds an unique restaurant. Chef Martin Vollmer, aided by his wife Beverly, bring both quality German cuisine and American favorites with a European haute cuisine touch to Waverly. Menu ranges from well known German dishes such as schnitzel or kassler rippchen (the latter often described as pork chops, but more like 1/2 inch thick ham steaks) to prime rib, salmon steaks, cordon bleu, or Swiss steaks. There are daily seasonal specials.
The beer and wine list, though leaning towards German selections, also represent tasty regional beers and distinctive American small winery wines.
The appetizer plate is a good reflection of the focus and diversity Martin's offers: a lightly soured kraut, creamy but slightly crisp carrots that have been both pickled and boiled, lightly spiced German potato salad, and a rich salmon spread.

Wonder quality We were pleasantly surprised by the fresh and delicous food we found in the small town of Waverly while we traveled in Iowa in July. I especially ejoyed the pork with apple stuffing. I would recommend this resaurant to anyone. [15 Aug 2004 21:41:01]

Great Place to eat!! We stumbled on Martin's by accident, and now make it a mandatory stop when we are in the area. You can't go wrong with any dish, but the German dishes are especially good. The regional German dishes are even better!! Martin will normally come out and say hello and he is such a nice guy. If you are really lucky, you'll get Nisvet as your server. He's a very good guy, too. [18 Aug 2004 20:37:13]

Fantastic small town find! Who would think that in little Waverly, Iowa there would be a restaurant like this? Great German entrees as well as the usual American fare for the less adventurous. Be sure to ask for the house dressing on your salad, its like a horseradishy thousand island---but that description doesn't do it justice. Friendly small town atmosphere: it's a rare occasion Martin himself won't stop by your table. Good German wines to complement the food. [13 May 2006 13:15:01]

Our Favorite Place to Eat! We really enjoy the excellent dishes on the menu - especially the German ones, but the others are a real treat as well. The service is simply wonderful, and Chef Martin often visits with the guests in the dining room. We make it at least a monthly trip, sometimes for lunch, sometimes for dinner. Our 3 children love the excellent food, too! [01 Jan 2007 17:50:53]

Sunday Brunch is awesome! The brunch is from 10am to 2pm. It offers breakfast items as well as traditional German dishes and incredible desserts, all for around $11.00. I strongly recommend this brunch as well as the evening dinner fare. [21 Feb 2007 13:46:08]
