Fine for sushi...
but not as good as another sushi place. Sometimes my husband and I go here, though, because the ambience is nice--low lighting, quiet atmosphere--more romantic than another sushi place. Overall, I'd say the quality of food is lower, though--although the service has been good.    [03 Sep 2004 23:42:51]

Great Sushi
I have eaten at sushi restaurants all over the United States and I have to say that Mikado is one of my favs. The crab in the california rolls is always fresh and the fish tastes like it was flown in that day. I am a big fan of Mikado and I personally recommend the tuna rolls. The service has always been great as well. Mikado is a must for any sushi lover.    [11 Feb 2005 18:37:16]

Not fresh
I am from a city that has the best sushi in the country. I went to Mikado and it's not fresh--and it's overpriced. Even though they have a variety of different rolls, the quality and price you receive is not up to par.    [22 Jul 2005 11:01:09]

Mikado provide bad service and food
The restaurant is always understaffed, so customers wait forever to be serviced. What's worse is that the manager and service totally disrespect customers. I don't recommend the restaurant to anyone.    [15 Feb 2006 13:10:18]

skip the sushi
The quality of fish is sub-par --skip the sushi (it is the midwest afterall, save your sushi outings for places on the coast). The regular menu is really enjoyable though - good japaenese food. The service can be slow, but I enjoy the extra time to talk with my spouse (and they're always friendly, just understaffed I think). Choose one of the combination dinners - LOTS of food and the variety is fun. When you're being seated, ask to be seated on the right side of the restaurant. The lighting is more dim and the tables are arranged in nooks and crannies that make for a more pleasant dining experience. The left side of the restaurant is very open and has just a touch of a cafeteria feel.    [03 Mar 2006 10:45:06]

Very Unhappy
The food was ok, but the service and management need severe help. I hate to say that the only thing that might help is some new faces.    [07 Mar 2006 20:16:00]

RUDE! RUDE! RUDE!
I have never encountered an owner or staff that has been more rude. The owner must want no one to ever come here. Shocking! Avoid!    [26 Mar 2006 17:44:39]

good sushi but slow service
Mikado has the best sushi we've been able to find in Bloomington, so we keep returning, but the service is rather poor. The wait staff is not unfriendly, just slow. If you have time to wait and aren't aggravated by your tea taking a while to appear, I'd recommend it. The piano roll rocks if you like spicy and who knew tofu could taste so yummy?    [30 Apr 2007 14:30:35]

Go to Domo. The Mikado has an unconscionably snobby attitude but can't back it up with good sushi! While I was there I heard waitstaff insulting other Japanese restaurants to diners. Not classy. The fish was okay - not as fresh as Domo, but not shabby like Asuka or freezerburned like Sushi Bar. The chef had no panache - easily the dullest looking bowl of Sake Don I've ever had. He gave it a sparse dusting of sesame seeds and a pile of carrot shavings. And a tree leaf. What? At Domo it comes with tiny piles of sweet crunchy orange tobiko, daikon, and a generous dusting of gomasio - a blend of roasted sesame seeds, ground with sea salt and three mineral rich sea vegetables, dulse, nori, and komub. Delicious at Domo - boring as hell here - just the fish slabbed over rice. And some carrots. And a tree leaf. No kidding. Tree leaf. The sushi rice hadn't been rinsed enough and was lacking in rice vinegar during the cooldown, making it starchy and lacking the glossy smoothness of really good sushi rice. It's also dark as hell in there - probably to disguise the relatively poor quality of the fish. I went while there was still enough light to see how anemic and pale my salmon was - but once the sun went down, the whole table was plunged into near total darkness. Of course, there's no hiding the chewy texture of sushi that isn't fresh. Gross and also? Really weird. I was really disgusted by the fact that the servers were talking in such ridiculously haute tones about other Japanese restaurants in town when theirs was so obviously not that great. It might be a little better than Asuka, and *anything* is better than Sushi Bar, but Domo remains tops.    [03 Jul 2007 21:33:19]
