Great Food, Outrageous Wine Prices While the food was excellent, one of the "recommended wines" to us was a Cotes du Rhone at either $32 0r $36 for a bottle. By chance, I had just bought a case of the very same wine and vintage for $8.10 a bottle. Marking up wine 4 to 5 times retail is a scam that all should be aware of. I would suggest drinking tap water there. [30 Mar 2003 03:22:23]

Dave Letterman's Mom knows her stuff Classic Kitchen is where Dave's mom celebrated her birthday last year - can't say as I blame her. The owner, Steve Kneipp, clearly loves the food he makes, and loves to make his guests happy. Bar none, the best homemade ice creams on earth -- always with a surprise flavor that is out of this world. While the decor is a bit "ladies tea room," it is nonetheless spotless and decorated with love and taste. The waitress (and, yes, there is only one) is superb and does an amazing job. A bit pricey, but lunch is more reasonable and a good way to get to know what this great restaurant had to offer. Classic Kitchen is definitely one-of-a-kind, and we're lucky to have it here. I'm a bit taken aback at the wine comment made here - as I don't normally drink wine out, because I am always the one to drive. That is definitely a ridiculous price for that wine. But we, with our needs, have always felt satisfied and that it was a reasonable value for the quality and creativity of the dishes. I love that coffee and hot tea are serverd in china cups. Food? Yes. Atmosphere? Ummmmm..... We dined there a couple of weeks back, and it was definitely unlike other dining experiences in this price range. The food was serviceable - even good at times. We particularly liked the pate appetizer. As mentioned in another review, though, the wine was exhorbitantly overpriced.
The atmosphere was decidedly down market. Imagine what your mom's idea of restaurant decor might be. Now, decrease your expectations. That should give you some idea. This deficiency apparently was to be ameliorated by rather chummy chatting with the owner, who kept up a steady conversation about his trips abroad to procure exotic ingredients. Either you love that kind of stuff or you don't. I was reminded of the line from "Steel Magnolias"... "An ounce of pretension is worth a pound of manure..." [01 Oct 2005 02:51:42]

Best Kept Secret Having moved here from Connecticut, it took me 3 yrs to find the Classic Kitchen. It was excellent...loved the food, atmosphere, and personal attention and unique ingredients. Will definitely go back often...and look forward to taking some cooking classes with Steve. [22 Oct 2006 19:55:51]
