Casual Grace
For a coffee bar, Charlie's has an extensive menu. The atmosphere is graceful and casual, with a regular supply of live music (including a weekly open-mic, see: www.myspace.com/openmic_charlies ) and poetry, not to mention the print gallery (Featuring the monotypes of Louis F. Dow, among others) and day-spa (Inner Radiance). Charlie's also plays an important role in the Richmond Community, functioning as a meeting-place for many local clubs and organizations, and the casual environment lends itself to meaningful and spontaneous conversation among friends as well as strangers (see: http://www.chrishardie.com/weblog/archives/2005/10/the-quality-of-public-dialogue-in-richmond.html under the bullet marked “private gathering places”). The building is often host to public festivals, featuring many varieties of music and activity. Charlie's had made some changes and they are great. And really when you go in the a coffee bar it's all about the atmosphere. And Charlie's has it.
