Description
A beautiful Mexican cantina and grill, which includes an outdoor dining area under roof, complete with painted wagon wheels. The restaurant occupies approximately half of the existing building, which at one time, long ago, was used in its entirety by another Mexican establishment, Casa Galvan, and, in the early 1960s by Matthew's Restaurant.
When first entering El Toro, one faces a multi-colored chalkboard which features daily specials and select entrees. Mexican art is everywhere. Some of the chairs and tables up close to the windows are of genuine Mexican construction. At the rear of the restaurant, one finds faux bottles of some of the finest tequila and other libations, artfully filled with colored water to keep thirsty patrons honest. It is a formidable display, and quite inviting. (The real bar can provide much of what the display doesn't.)
Both booths and tables abound.

A White-Wine Companion! El Toro's menu is similar to many generic Mexican menus, except that, here, the food backs it up! I tried the Shrimp Cocktail - Mexican Style, with an appetizer order of Guacamole. Chardonnay to match!
Usually (as I've eaten there before), the specie of wine you get at El Toro is Spanish in origin, sort of in keeping with an Hispanic tradition.
My Shrimp Cocktail was a taste sweeter than at another Mexican place I frequent, but the difference was refreshing. Best of all, the entree was COLD! The way it should be! Also, attention is paid to keeping white wines chilled, and the reds at room temperature.
Service was incredible, friendly, welcoming. (Waiters often use headsets during busy hours.) Don't get them started on wines. They'll bring you a sample for tasting! [05 Jul 2005 11:41:38]

El Toro Has Some Unique Dishes While El Toro Restuarant in Lexington Kentucky does have much of the standard Mexican fare, I would like to point out a couple of really outstanding dishes.
Filete De Pescado - Catfish fried in an amazing light batter of what tastes like garlic and spices. This dish is delectable and served with Charro Beans.
Pregnant Burrito - This dish is like a mixed Fajita in a burrito. It has everything inside, but not overdone. Delicious!!
Pollo Chipotle - This is a spicy dish that is quite unique and delicious!! Made with Sour Cream and Chipotle peppers, the fiery dish is great with Corn Tortillas.
Shrimp, Scallop and Fish Fajitas - this surprisingly delicious dish includes peppers, onions, shrimp, scallops and one Filete de Pescado. Best on corn tortillas (if you like them).
I could go one about several other dishes, but if you go and try one of these, then you can't go wrong. I have eaten most of the dishes on the menu over the years and even the enchiladas are great! The Burrito Supremos are simple but wonderfully seasoned.
Despite the delicious food, the best thing about El Toro, is the people. This is a family owned restaurant, so the people actually care about you returning as a customer. They are warm, helpful, and delightful people who have become friends over the years.
This is one of my favorite restaurants! [21 Aug 2007 15:01:39]

My family loves El Toro's, we eat there a minimum of once per month, and go on occasional binges where we are there weekly. Our favorite is the appetizer Camerones Merida sp? which is shrimp wrapped in crisp tortilla with a wonderful citrusy tasting white wine sauce that is just yummy. The presentation in always lovely. We also LOVE their guacamole and have to have it with whatever else we order. The staff is friendly and consistent, they try hard to make each visit like going to a friend's house for a bite to eat. I The food was disgusting. Both my husband and I got chicken burritos and found pieces of ligament in the chicken. It tasted canned. The rice was clearly cheap microwave rice. The managers constantly bugged us: "How is it?" "Are you enjoying everything?" etc. and it was difficult to remain polite when the food tasted so awful and we were constantly being bothered. Even stranger, the restaurant is seemingly divided into a "Hispanic" side (where Hispanic customers are seated) and a "White" side, which really put us off.
Absolutely not worth the price (or the time spent,) especially when you can go to pretty much any other Mexican restaurant in Lexington and get better food (most especially, Jalapenos, Clamatos, and Cielito Lindo) [26 Oct 2008 14:19:52]
