Best Bar-B-Q'd Mutton on Earth An original secret "black" sauce from a fifth generation family tradition creates barbequed meats that are one-of-kind delicious. Various meats are available but the specialty is mutton. In a city that touts an "International Bar-B-Q Festival", you have to be good to get noticed. This is the best. It's all about the "Q" here, nothing else matters. [15 May 2000 13:12:13]

It's the best. There are other barbecue restaurants in town but Old Hickory is the best. I grew up there and was nearly an adult before I realized "barbecue" and "mutton" were not always the same thing! I live in England now, but every year make at least one trip back home and always have at least one meal there. [05 Oct 2002 19:11:00]

Best in the BBQ Capital of the World While not the most famous restaurant in town, Old Hickory is the best. As a native of the town, I have grown up eating at all of the different restaurants and now exclusively go to Old Hickory. The mutton and burgoo alone are worth the 3 hour drive home from college. Best Bar-B-Q Mutton Anywhere. We've moved away and can't find any barbeque that comes even close to this. This stuff is worth moving back to Kentucky for! [08 Apr 2005 17:04:17]
Food: Service: Ambiance: Overall: Recommended Dishes: sliced and chopped mutton, baked beans, bean soup and cornbread

Best Barbecue in the World! Okay, okay, I'm another Owensboro native writing to plug the best barbecue anywhere. I now live in Texas, and import it everytime I go home. My parents now live in Louisville, but it's worth the two hour drive to stock up!
While my brother and dad would disagree, the chopped mutton is the BEST! (They prefer the sliced.)
Been going there for almost 50 years since it was in the cinderblock place across the street. I loved the old place, the new one is, well, new.
You hear a lot more about The Moonlight... but the locals all eat at Old Hickory! [30 May 2005 23:30:19]

Old Hickory is second to none! I really hated giving a less than perfect score for "service" and "ambiance" regarding Old Hickory because this is a place that makes you feel like you can prop your feet up and make yourself at home. The hard working employee's are not perfect and the restaurant isn't exactly a place to propose marriage in candle lights and mandolins softly playing in the background. But that's exactly why Old Hickory is the best place to eat...down home folks serving up the best BBQ in Owensboro and making you feel like you are part of their family. [08 Apr 2006 19:02:35]

The BEST I've ever had! It's been almost 30 years since I left O'boro. I've been lucky enough to live all over the world and tried everyone's Bar-B-Q. I love New Mexicos smoky sauce, Texas' heat, North Carolina's vineagary red, and the south's sweet stickiness.
But the Old Hickory Pit's takes them all.
It's sweet and smoky, vineagary and bright. I like Moonlight's (North Carolina Lite) but Old Hickory Pit's is like a fine wine, deep, complex, flavorful and balanced. Heads above every other sauce I've ever had. Anyone got the recipe? [01 Jun 2006 20:32:43]

Thanks I'm very humble to see all these great comments about Old Hickory. I believe we have not only the best bbq in town but the best prices. We take pride over there on Washington Ave. to serve great BBQ. Thanks for the comments. [24 Jul 2006 01:58:32]

Another I'll join the party and confess to riding my bike to eat at Old Hickory when it was located across the street from it's current location. That was almost 45 years ago now. I've lived in Alabama for the past 30 years and still won't miss a visit to Old Hickory whenevern I'm in Owensboro. Man I sure wish I had some of that chopped mutton in front of me right now!
