Description

As the name says, oysters. Raw on the half shell is the specialty but they will batter and fry them and put them in a sandwich for you too. The local favorites like gumbo, crayfish, jambalaya and beans and rice are found here too. The decor is functional and worn and worthy of nearly a century of serving up food and drink. Being tucked in on a street that nearly feels like an alley helps keep the balance of the patrons from becoming totally tourists. Although they are welcome too.

Do you crave oysters on the half shell ?
This is New Orleans most famous oyster bar and for a good reason. They always have the freshest and most salty oysters around. They even have an "oyster cam" so you can go on line and watch people eat oysters. The oyster shuckers are real pros they shuck oysters so fast the look like they are dealing cards. Both tourist and locals belly up to the bar for these bi-valve beauties. If you don't eat raw oysters don't bother, sure, there are other things on the menu but so what! I guess the oysters are so fresh because they don't hang around long enough to be anything else. This place stays busy.    [17 Oct 2003 16:33:35]
