Description
Luigi's is an old-time Italian deli in the spirit of Central Grocery and the now defunct Progress Grocery, and its specialty is the same: the muffaletta. The lines are shorter at Luigi's than at the competition, the prices are lower, and the muffaletta's at least as good.
Luigi's also offers soup (made daily, from scratch) and classic Italian-American fare such as lasagna, as well as Italian and Mediterranean delicacies including anchovies, oils, dried figs, and pasta, a modest selection of wine, Italian deli meats, and bottled beverages.
Seating is extremely limited; items are wrapped as though for a long haul. Carry your sandwich to nearby Jackson Square or Woldenberg Park on the river on a nice day.

The premier muffaletta Undeservedly less popular than Central Grocery (no doubt due to Central's listing in all sorts of tourist guides as the original home of the muffaletta), but that's better for the rest of us as it keeps the lines shorter and the prices lower.
In my opinion Luigi's offers a better muffaletta. The bread has a superior texture, and there's something better about the giardinera that I can't identify.
Also worth noting is that this is one of the few pockets of "real New Orleans" left in the more traversed sections of the Quarter. The accents are native, the service no-frills yet courteous, the decor minimalist, the overall feel pleasantly gritty. The focus is on food. Ignatius Reilly would have eaten here and possibly enjoyed himself. [08 Mar 2003 05:00:04]
