Description

Located in a converted gas station, the Trolley Stop, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week (except during parades and once a year for cleaning) has become somewhat of a local institution, catering to locals, people working the night shift, students, and the occasional savvy tourist. Creole mainstays including po' boys, gumbo, and red beans and rice are served, as well as traditional greasy-spoon breakfast food.

Not bad for three in the morning.
Trolley Stop serves my mother's favorite gumbo. They use too light a roux for my taste but nevertheless it's pretty good. The seafood po'boys are also recommendable, although the choice of bread could be better the fillings themselves are well-done, especially the fried oysters.

Stay away from the breakfast fare. The pancakes and waffles are nothing to write home about, neither are the grits, the eggs are heavy, and the sides are greasy.    [08 Mar 2003 16:16:14]

De gustibus non disputandum est
I must disagree with Ben about breakfast at the Trolley Stop Cafe. If your idea of a hearty breakfast is granola with sliced kiwi and star fruit,well,OK-stay away from Trolley Stop. But if you like fried eggs, buttered toast, grits, bacon or sausage or ham then this is your place. The omlettes are great and are enough for two. Cholesterol be damned!    [24 Dec 2003 12:43:36]
