The atmosphere seems nicer than average for most small, local, Chinese restaurants. However, I ordered takeout which left much to be desired. The soup had an artifical flavor, perhaps from too much MSG, and could have used a lot more spices and vegetables. The fried rice was equally as uninteresting. The other common Chinese appetizer that I tried was the egg roll - usually a safe bet. This egg roll was practically inedible - only containing the terribly flavored cabbage and nothing else. I do hear the General Gau's chicken is pretty good. So perhaps the main dishes are worth a shot.    [03 Mar 2004 10:38:23]

Keep Driving
My family and I, having just moved to the area, decided to give this place a try. We've had better ideas. The decor in the place made me wonder if they were in the middle of renovations and I was a bit concerned to see we the only patrons. After being seated I placed my hand on the table and found that it was so sticky, I couldn't move my Chinese horoscope mat from its place. The service was less than amiable, especially when we asked to leave the fried shrimp out of the Pu Pu platter and to substitute Peking ravioli. We were told "No," flat out, even though the ravioli is cheaper than the shrimp.

Then when we asked for tea and we were brought over a sticky pot with one tea bag in it. It was essentially colored water and when we asked for a second tea bag we were given attitude.

But all of this was just a prelude to the awful food. The only thing that was reasonably edible was the teriyaki. The chicken wings still had feathers on them and the fired rice was so greasy I couldn't even swallow it.

When we told the waitress that we couldn't eat the food she said, as if she heard this daily, "Okay, pay half price." We didn't pay half price, we got up and left and will never go back!    [21 Nov 2006 08:35:32]

I completely disagree with the other two reviewers on this page. I have found the food to be one of the best in Boston, a city where good Chinese food is hard to come by. My favorite dish they serve is the Hot Basil Noodles, although my husband swears by the General Gao's. The service, mostly from the take-out end, has been relatively quick and done with nothing but a smile. I would recommend.    [13 Dec 2006 19:47:30]
