At These Prices, I'd Like a Chair Jasper White, one of the pioneers of gourmet dining, hopes to capitalize on diners' fond memories of casual meals by the shore. Of course, those nostalgic memories will cost you big bucks - far more than in an authentic shack.
The food WAS good. My scallops were large and grilled to perfection. Other pieces of fish on the menu were also extremely tasty. But for $18, you expect more than five scallops. And that $18 doesn't even get you vegetables, which are a la carte. Only a dotcom millionaire would pay the $42 for a lobster, then shell out another $1 for an ear of corn. (The corn, by the way, had bits of husk arranged artistically).
Service was slow. Really slow. We were seated at a bench at a long "picnic table," so our backs killed us by the end of the evening.
There is a nice bar area, which might be your best bet [15 Jun 2000 18:01:05]

Great Food! The clam bake was wonderful and the Chorico was an added plus. The grilled sea bass with black eye pea succoatash was to die for. The desserts were first rate. Waiters were very amiable. Service a bit slow. [14 Aug 2003 16:06:41]

Terrible If I can dissuade one person from going to this restaurant, I will have done a great service. I love seafood - the place in Cambridge is right near my home, so I have been there twice. Both times were among the worst experiences of my amatuer dining life.
The food is wildly overpriced. Some say the food is good - I was very very unimpressed. I would say it's average, and that's being charitable. My second time there I was on a first date and someone burned something in the kitchen. We had been there 5 minutes when the LOUDEST fire alarm you've ever heard proceeded to go off for the next hour we were there. It was brutal. We rushed through our meal so we could get out of there.
At the end of the meal our waitress (who was rude anyway) didn't compensate us in any way for the incredible inconvenience of this fire alarm. I don't mean to sound like a baby, because I'm really willing to put up with a lot of crap without complaint, but seriously - an incredibly loud fire alarm for the entire course of the meal and she couldn't knock off our drinks or something?
I will NEVER go back. Save your money and your hearing PLEASE!!! [10 Feb 2005 18:56:06]

Terrific experience I met someone there for a first date. She picked it based on reputation. She'd not been there. We sat at Frankie's bar. Shared a nice bottle of wine. We didn't have an entree but split a dozen fresh oysters (selected by the restaurant), the tuna tartar, and a dozen shrimp. The oysters were fresh and excellent, the tuna tartar was exceptional, the shrimp was good.
Frankie was very knowledgible about their wines and the menu. The bar was VERY noisy. Converstation was difficult but by huddling close together we were able to talk. Huddling close (for any reason) proved to be a pleasent experience, so in a way I could count the noise as a plus. But it was very very noisy.
While I did not consider it over priced, we could have easily eaten a full dinner elsewhere for the cost of a bottle of wine and 3 appetizers. That said, the oysters and tuna were well worth every penny.
Despite the noise, I would definitely return. Frankie's service was unobtrusive, but very effective. All in all I was very pleased [13 May 2005 13:00:35]
