Food A+ Service D-
The food is excellent at this cozy little restaurant. However, last night was my last visit, and I will no longer recommend it to my friends. No one seems to note or care that table settings are not correct. My companion had no side plate and when one was requested, it was provided without comment. I noticed too that the unoccupied table next to us also had a missing side plate. This was Friday night, about 5:30pm, and only two other tables were occupied, not a hectic situation.

We ordered our wine and entrees and my friend (celebrating her birthday) ordered a salad. As she began eating, someone tried to take away the slice of bread remaining in basket without asking either of us. Two minutes later, another waitperson began removing the dish of olives, again without asking. Half way through her salad, our fish entrees were brought to table and we were forced to make room for them. Hers cooled down of course as she finished her salad, but she chose not to make a fuss and have it rewarmed (no-one of course offered). For dessert, we decided to share the bread pudding, and to have a coffee and a tea also. The dessert was plunked down in center of table and then two forks were added. We requested two plates. The coffee was delicious. However, no lemon or milk was provided with the tea and when ordering, we were not asked if they were desired. My companion added a little cream and then a little water to her tea to make it palatable. At that point, we just wanted to flee this inhospitable place.

Against my better judgment, I did leave a tip, albeit a smaller one than usual. That was only because our waitress had not been unfriendly, nor the water server who was the only one to pass a friendly remark. The man who served the salad, entrees, and removed bread basket was condescending and had a sarcastic tone in his voice. I observed him interacting with other customers and this was not true.
This was my 4th visit to this little restaurant and on each occasion, I have thoroughly enjoyed the food but have experienced condescension from a member of staff. However, last night, what was supposed to be a lovely meal in a special place was marred by the strain of feeling unwelcome. What a pity that a wonderful chef should be wasted in such a place.    [06 Oct 2001 10:55:56]

We have eaten at Saporito's together and with friends maybe about eight or nine times. The food is extraordinarily good, as good as anything in New York or other gourmet centers. I found the service friendly and small town, a very unpretentious restaurant, top quality, warm and welcoming.    [25 Oct 2002 20:05:54]

Legends in Their Own Mind
Hi - tried it three times. The staff thinks they are doing you a favor by providing a table & service.

I've been in double-wide trailers with nicer furnishings and more space...pass.    [30 Nov 2002 18:36:12]

Our New Favorite Restaurant
My wife and I visited Saporito's last night on the recommendation of a friend who maintained this was his favorite South Shore restaurant. If only there were a web page to review friends, as well, because his advice was excellent!

Saporito's is now our favorite South Shore restaurant. The food, the service, the atmosphere - all were flawless. Don't miss this one.    [01 Mar 2003 08:09:10]

We Were Pleased
It was our first visit to this quaint little restaurant which is in an old summer cottage and were delighted with the food and the service. Our waitress was there when needed and very pleasant. However, I do believe the host/hostess could be more pleasant as the first impression you get is from the host/hostess. We are taking another couple there as a birthday present and expect the food will be as wonderful as it was the first time.

Will Not Return
Have been wanting to try this restaurant for some time after hearing from talk it was good. Well, my palate was not impressed. There were four of us who eat out quite often and all were in agreement. We will not return. So I will not be recommending Saporito's to anyone.    [21 Sep 2003 08:09:35]

Outstanding
5 star quality food without the attitude. Simply elegant. An absolutely charming restaurant. An experience you would liken to a small family restaurant in Portofino. Can't wait to go back. Thank you!    [11 Nov 2003 15:30:46]

My wife and I, with and without another couple, have been there 4 times since moving from New York last year. We've loved it every time.

The menu keeps evolving, and other than missing the spinach salad with sauteed Vidalia onions, walnuts, and Gorgonzola cheese, it keeps getting better.

Our first time there, I had mentioned it was my wife's birthday when making the reservation. So, surprisingly to us both, she was presented a delicious piece of chocolate mousse cake with a candle, and a waiter sat in our booth and sang a birthday song by Joni Mitchell (after asking permission).

The food is mouth-wateringly good, and the service has been great. Other than putting the sparkling water in the same style glasses as the tap water, I can't think of any complaints.

We're going back tonight and I can hardly wait...I'm bringing extra insulin.    [03 Jan 2004 15:08:49]

I've been there once and loved it. The wait staff was unusually kind. When we were sat at a table, we requested the vacant booth. We were told that it was reserved and that didn't bother us. Soon after our bread arrived, we were offered a booth that had just cleared. It meant moving all the settings as we had already started the bread and water, but it was their suggestion and we took them up on it. Unfortunately, we found the bench far too shallow for my 6'3" husband, and were more comfortable at the table, but we never said anything because we just thought their offer to move us was extremely kind.

The food: amazing! My only hesitation is that my sweet potatoes were lukewarm and the haricot verts had a cold center, but my pork tenderloin was the most tender, well cooked, tastiest I've ever had. I would definitely return, but would warn them in advance that I like my food hot.    [23 Oct 2004 10:40:55]
