Description
Opened in July 2006, John Carlino has created a brand-new bistro and martini lounge in an unexpected location: an almost abandoned section of Exchange Street, which once served as the basement service entrances to Malden's old downtown Pleasant Street stores. Finding it might be difficult in your car (it's behind the two multi-story parking garages on Route 60), but it's an easy 10-minute walk from the Malden Center Orange Line station.
This upscale bistro in a neighborhood undergoing a revitalization, with Malden's growing population of luxury apartment dwellers forming an initial clientele, might take some time to discover its niche, and its opening menu reveals quite an assortment: homemade lobster ravioli filled with lobster and spinach, grilled New York strip steak served with country mashed potatoes and green beans, crispy eggplant Napoleon layered with Portabello mushrooms, basil pesto, roasted red peppers and mozzarella and ricotta. Dinner entrees ($15-23) are likely to change so check their web-site for the full menu. Also open for lunch and Sunday brunch.

Exchange Street Bistro, Malden, MA. Great addition to the local area. Great alternative to heading into the city. Great atmosphere, the food is wonderful, the bar is well tended. Great night out! [05 Aug 2006 00:38:00]

Finally...an Upscale Restaurant in Malden There are many good Italian restaurants in Malden but that's about it. So it is wonderful to have the new Exchange Street Bistro open. The food is excellent as is the service and atmosphere. The dinner we had was less expensive than it would have been in Boston but certainly just as good or better. Let's hope this is the beginning of a very welcome trend! [10 Aug 2006 09:25:25]

Good Food, Terrible Service Second visit to this new bistro, and on both occasions, service was terrible. Bartenders that do not know how to open a bottle of wine and servers who do not understand the basics of good service. 45 minutes for a drink order, half-filled martinis, another 45 minute wait for appetizers, and 1 hour and 15 minutes after placing a dinner order to be then informed that the special ordered was not available - all is inexusable. Items ordered were not as delivered.
Complaints brought to the manager were brushed off with a simple statement that he had not had a complaint since opening. Unfortunately for the Bistro, there are many more good restaurants within a 10 mile radius. Good food does not make up for all of the service-related shortcomings. The problems are all front-of-the-house at this establishment. [15 Oct 2006 13:31:58]

Awful - Take My Advice and Stay Home Nothing about this restaurant was good except the atmosphere. Nicely decorated but nothing else. Not a lot of menu options, long wait times, unprofessional staff and management. They seem to spend more time hiding in a back room than out on the floor with customers. I was one of three tables filled and they probably had 5 servers floating around. Sad. They also tried to serve a child pasta with wine sauce repeatedly and tried to tell us it was butter. For those who know, wine sauce cannot be confused with butter. I paid $150 for nothing. [23 Oct 2006 19:52:42]

Good Service, Fair Food It seems Exchange Street is a mixed bag as of now...I've read other comments detailing the good food and fair service...my experience was quite opposite...
The Seafood Chowder I ordered was hardly bistro style...far too thick and served luke warm.
The atmosphere and service were both great. I think I'll give Exchange Street Bistro another chance to iron out some of their issues. [01 Nov 2006 08:51:49]

McDonald's Has Better Service This place is a complete joke. The food is poor quality and the service is so bad that ordering is a challenge. The manager is smug and really rude. The food was luke warm and over cooked. The dining experience was unpleasant and rushed by our service. Do yourself a favor and order chinese. [27 Dec 2007 13:51:24]

love it Love this place - food was great. We go to Boston all the time and to find this place in Malden is a rare find. [29 Dec 2007 19:19:09]

A bit of Back Bay here in Malden The food was great and fresh. I had the veal oscar and my date had the eggplant. We also had the tapas for an appetizer. The service was good but could use a little work with opening wine. I have had the veal oscar here before and it was better with the fresh mozzarella. The eggplant was better there original way insted of how its served now. Will definitely go back - love the drinks there as well good selection of martinis. [29 Dec 2007 22:07:11]
