Not Only a Great Beer. Offshore Ale Offers Great Wine and an Updated Menu Three weeks ago my wife and I landed on the Island late in the evening via the ferry from Woods Hole. As we left the docks of Oak Bluffs, we were hungry, tired of driving and anxious to visit Offshore Ale Brewery for a quick bite before we headed off to the west end of the Island.
Like an old friend, we stepped into the rustic interior, ornate with interesting seafaring decor. A barrel of salted peanuts welcomes patrons to a sample while waiting to be seated. The shells are welcomed to the floor when emptied. This is a very casual, very fun place to hand out and catch some cool bands and sports events and eat. In our case on this night, a quick dinner and glass of wine.
Immediately after our pleasant server handed us the menu, I knew we were in for a treat. Artisan pizza, steamed mussels, creative salads, entrees ranging from " Much better than Mom's meatloaf " to Portuguese fisherman's stew. From the peeks we took of the plates of our neighbors, it all looked good and plentiful. Our server caught our attention with the evening's special of little neck clams and linguine.
Now some may contend the often-offered, and somewhat simplistic, creation may not be worthy of a critic's consideration, but I beg to differ. This dish requires the freshest of herbs, tenderly prepared pasta and top quality littleneck clams that are succulent and served hot and not overdone. The kitchen had this one right on. The parsley and other herbs came across as if they had been just picked from the garden. The linguini, al-dente and the littlenecks plentiful and perfectly served, hot and just done so they were tender to the bite. Our wine of choice was a delightful Chianti that complemented our meal wonderfully.
A comment on their wine list. It is well rounded and most importantly the prices allow patrons to experience many delicious offerings at a great value.
We both completed our meal with the wedge salad that may sound strange but not in Europe. Try it that way some time.
Now I don't want to forget what is the shining star of Offshore Ale is the beer. Yes, it is made on the premises and by all measure of standards it is outstanding. Seasonal offerings are fresh and interesting. When on the Island, this is a must stop. [14 Oct 2007 20:32:46]
