Innovative and Pricey Blue Ginger is an experience worth having once. Ming Tsai presides over the open kitchen, barking out the orders and joking with his staff.
The food is his innovative interpretation of East Meets West. An appetizer of corn broth with shiitake and corn dumplings was bursting with flavor and texture. My entree of Indonesian Curry Noodles with Shrimp and rock shrimp had the most delicate taste of any curry I've ever had.
Desserts were not quite as innovative - the sorbets were tasty but not exceptional, a fried shumai was not nearly exciting as I expected.
Service was attentive but a bit affected. There was a mix-up in the kitchen that delayed the appetizers, and it was met with profuse apologies. [22 Aug 2000 18:13:56]

Never Again Anytime my company decides to pay for a meal, they pick this place. I heard only great stuff about BG but the food was disappointing, the average dish was bland and immemorable. The portions were incredibly miniscule. Never again. [03 Aug 2003 23:41:28]

Mediocre at Best Very disappointing. Lacked in refinement from decor to food quality. Signature lobster dish was overcooked, uninspired, and bland...certainly not worth the $35 price tag. [26 Mar 2005 23:19:21]

Perplexingly Inconsistent Food Quality It is perplexing when dishes are inconsistent in quality. My dining companion and I had an uneven experience in this restaurant. Her Wok-Stirred Maitake Mushroom Pad Thai with Spicy Peanut Sauce was excellent, but my Ahi Tuna Poke with Crispy Sushi Rice Cake and Watercress-Tosaka Salad was bland and disappointing. For the main course, the situation was reversed: my Sake-Miso Marinated Alaskan Butterfish was excellent, with a wealth of subtle flavors and cooked to perfection; her Garlic-Black Pepper Lobster with Lemongrass Fried Rice and Pea Tendril Salad was disappointing and overcooked, with an over salty dark sauce masking any freshness from the lobster. It’s an unusual situation when one dish could be so good, while another can be so-so. We will have to learn the menu and order more from experience the next time. [29 Sep 2006 16:35:40]
