Description

This is a Sushi Restaurant very near the intersection of Georia Avenue and Route 108 in the center of Olney. It can be hard to find as it is halfway down a small strip mall that is oriented perpendicular to the street, and hidden from street view. Only the sign on Georgia Avenue betrays its presence.

I LOVE SUSHI
A gem tucked away in Olney with a boat bar and beautiful Samurai Swords for ambiance. The food is outstanding.
Eat in or take it to go, it still tastes great.    [23 Feb 2004 19:36:23]

Superpurb Sushi
Who would have thought that a small town like Olney, 2/12 hours from the water, would have a sushi restaurant this good. The fish is of superior quality, the chef is extremely skilled both in preparation and presentation, and the ambiance is extremely relaxing. The chef will create any sushi you desire regardless if it resides on the menu or not, along with creating new dishes that do not exist anywhere (I highly recommend asking for one of these unique creations, you will be pleasantly surprised). For the price there is nothing in the mid-atlantic that comes close.    [23 Jan 2006 15:57:07]

Slo-o-ow Service
The sushi is very good. We would like to be regulars as we live in the area and just love sushi.

Our biggest problem has been the incredibily slow service. There is only one sushi chef and only one waitress on duty. The chef seems to prepare carry-out orders before those of the customers in the restaurant. With just 2 or 3 tables filled we wait at least 30-45 minutes for the sushi order. So 10 minutes for the waitress to bring tea, 10 minutes more to order, 10-15 minutes for salad or miso, 30 minutes for sushi and 15 minutes to get the bill. In the ordinary or uncomfortable atmosphere --is just too long!

Also, the restaurant puts on the air conditioning only at opening time, so beware it can be very hot in the summer.

It is just not worth it, unless you are desparate for a fix of raw fish.    [11 Oct 2006 14:06:38]

Great Sushi Restaurant
My husband and I have eaten at Wasabi Zen many times and love it each time. You can always get a table, the food is delicious, the ambiance is nice but you can still be casual. The wait staff is fine and we've never had a problem with the wait. We love it!    [11 May 2007 20:57:56]

Not so Zen
I went to Wasabi Zen with my wife on a Sunday and were the only two guests in the entire place. We ordered 4 sushi rolls and two peices and it took 40 min. After giving the server less than 20 % of our $55 bill, (no alachol, no apps) she came out into the parking lot to ask if there was a problem. I said that it was slow and "good". Her reply, "Then go someplace else!"

The sushi was mediocre at best and service was poor.

I will be going someplace else without a doubt.    [12 Aug 2007 17:09:32]

dont make a mistake
I am speaking as a Korean American woman who frequents sushi restaurants all over DC, VA, and MD. The first time I tried out Wasabi Zen, it was a quiet day and my mother and I were the only customers so the service was decent and the food was great. Then today came and it was the most horrendous experience I have ever encountered eating out.

It started when we walked in--I could tell the server was not very happy and was already edgy over something. I figured it was just something in her personal life or work issues and we ordered our food and waited....and waited...and waited over 40 minutes for our food. Once it came out, the rice was so cold that it was almost hardened in place. Our soup was grainy and salty, as if it had been sitting out for a night. Trust me, I'm korean and love sushi, I know what true miso soup should taste like--I make it at home all the time.

While my friend and I were eating, people started streaming in, in groups of 2 to 5. Our server was running from table to table, and didn't bother to check into our table ONCE during the entire meal to ask for anything or refill our waters. But thats not what set me over the edge--halfway through our meal our server came to us with two small empty appetizer dishes and asked US TO TRANSFER OUR FOOD TO THESE PLATES SO SHE COULD GIVE OUR PLATES TO THE NEW CUSTOMERS because "we ran out of dishes because of the huge rush of customers." Keep in mind that one table is still unoccupied at this point and it is only reasonable that they have enough dishes for the amount of chairs set at the tables. So my friend and I grudgingly put the remainder of our meal on these smaller plates and finished up. It took our server another 20 minutes to get us our checks and she didn't properly apologize and didn't seem sorry at all.

The thing is, here are the demographics of the situation: My friend + I are the only minorities, everyone else was caucasian. Would she have asked a middle aged caucasian couple to give up their plates?

You do the math and figure our whether you want to fork over your hard earned money given the possibility of wanton impoliteness and rudeness you may encounter at wasabi zen. BTW, I still tipped over 15% out of courtesy.    [15 Jan 2008 14:21:56]

Frequent Visitor
I have eaten my fair share of sushi at this cute restaurant and I enjoy the relaxed, but courteous service. I also am not the average American who wants everything fast and eats in her car...I take time to enjoy my time out. There is one waitress and one sushi chef and the atmosphere is quiet with a varied crowd. Very cute place for a date.    [28 Feb 2008 15:25:30]

Recommended Dishes: The honey and crunchy california rolls are great if you're not into raw sushi, the spicy tuna and salmon are excellent as well. The shrimp undon soup is very good as well.
