Description
Located in the southern part of Freeport, well beyond all the outlet shops, Classic Custard is an old-fashioned stand offering real frozen custard, in the traditional three daily flavors: vanilla, chocolate, and the "flavor of the day."
They also offer regular soft serve ice cream in a range of flavors.
Only outdoor seating is available.
Open seasonally (Closes for the year in mid-October.)

A Summertime Treat Classic Custard offers a rarity in New England -- real frozen custard, of the variety that is common in the midwest, but largely unknown in these parts.
For the uninitiated, frozen custard has more egg than regular ice cream, allowing it to be lower in fat content while tasting smoother and creamier. It is best made fresh every day (which is why most stands only serve 3 flavors at a time).
Classic gets high marks just for being a custard stand in this largely deprived region. I know New Englanders love ice cream, but they seem to have a very high tolerance for icy textures, which are anathema to anyone who grew up on frozen custard.
That said, Classic gets low marks for ice control. Either their freezers are set too cold, or they didn't allow the custard to set correctly in the machine. On a recent visit, the chocolate was positively icy (though with good chocolate flavor), and the mango (flavor of the day) was not as smooth as expected (it was also lacking in mango flavor). Only the vanilla had the properly creamy texture of true custard. The vanilla also had good, though not outstanding, flavor, avoiding the overly sweet taste found at many stands. The vanilla was worth 4 stars for food; too bad they bungled the other flavors.
While Classic wouldn't come close to making a go of it in, say, Wisconsin (at least not until they learn to control the texture), I'm hopeful that they might get the chance to succeed in the custard-barren wasteland that is New England. [09 Sep 2004 17:54:05]

Must try! Classic Custard provides a fabulous treat. They serve chocolate, vanilla, and a flavor of the day, which is always so good that I have not yet sampled the vanilla and chocolate. All flavors, from fruity to sugary, have been creamy and delicious. Dulce de leche was a bit mild, but pina colada, peach and blackberry were fantastic. If I could choose only one food to live on for the rest of my life, it would be Classic Custard's maple frozen custard. You have to try it! [19 May 2005 19:13:08]

A Delicous Find Classic Custard in Freeport Maine. What a delicous find it was. We saw the sign for custard and couldnt believe that is could be really frozen custard. Not in Maine.
Well it was and it was delicous. The texture was so dense and creamy it was heavenly. The chocolate flavor was the best I had ever had and the vanilla was to die for.
I found the staff to be very polite and the shop was very clean and well organized. The service was quick and done with a smile and a thank you. [20 May 2005 21:46:12]

Real Custard I have had frozen custard in several places and Classic Custard is pretty good. I am from Wisconsin and they might be able to compete against Culver's they aren't quite as smooth as Michael's, Koppp's, Gille's, Storheim's, etc.
I think the above review "Summertime Treat" is pretty accurate. Classic Custard vanilla is good. I also had "day-old" Pumpkin (it was very good but had the icy problem mentioned above) and Grape Nuts (which was very good as well). [07 Jul 2005 16:41:55]

This was the first time I had tried frozen custard. The vanilla frozen custard was simply delicious. I had it with the specialty sundae, which was two scoops of vanilla custard with a peanut butter sauce that was out of this world and hot fudge sauce. We traveled an hour for this because we had heard so many good things about this place and it was well worth the time. The custard was so smooth and creamy. I can't wait to go back again. Yummy! This is a great stop for anyone! I don't usually like custard, but the coffee custard was to die for!!! it was delicious, and the coffee flavor cut the heavy taste that I don't love about custard. My husband, however loves the creamy, heavy, sweet taste of the vanilla and it's a delightful treat as a sundae!! (have to admit i do take a bite every now and then ... [27 Jun 2007 17:57:33]
