Legend A bar oriented toward the gay/lesbian community and their friends & families.
They became a local legend and national story when a homophobic, hate mongering preacher came to town and chose to picket the Aut Bar.
Looking for an appropriate response, they turned it into a fundraiser: The owner solicited pledges to an AIDS charity for every minute the preacher picketed. People responded in droves, from all over the community and the country, and the preacher helped raise $6,000. Maybe he'll run a 10K race next time!
I ate there once, and the food was decent and service friendly, despite the fact we looked very straight. [28 Aug 2003 22:19:54]

I like the food, I just don't usually have enough money for it. Everything is good though...Sometimes they may not have anywhere for you to sit though. I recommend going in the summer, that is the best time. [11 Feb 2005 10:08:36]

Service Please? The food is EXCELLENT.....but not worth the horrible service. I have, on more than one occasion, waited over 20 minutes for drinks to arrive. The food will take about as long to actully show up after you order it. In fact, I have seen couples get up and leave after about a half hour, still waiting for a server to come and take their drink order. During one visit, I actually had to walk my check into to the bar from the patio, as we had been waiting for any server to take it for about 30 minutes. Our drinks were comp'ed which was a nice gesture, but it didn't come close to making up for the experience. What this place needs is some competition (it's Ann Arbor's only gay/lesbian restaurant), or a good manager. I would love to be a regular patron (The Aut Burger is TO DIE for), but the exceptionally poor service is too much to stomach for even the ocassional dining experience. For how much this place, and it's owners, do for the community, one would think they would take better care of their patrons. [14 Aug 2005 11:41:35]

Wheres the luv? I would love to support the only gay resturaunt in Ann Arbor but am unwilling due to poor service from some of the staff. Too bad. They really do need some competition. [04 Jan 2007 12:04:25]

Aut bar staff...Why so mean? I am local to Ann Arbor. I am a 26 year old lesbian and have lived in A2 for six years. During my time here I have learned about the Aut bar and how in the past they have donated money for GLBT causes. I am an advocate for gay rights and am pleased to spend money at a place that uses some of that money to fight for us. Unfortunately the Aut bar staff has mad it very hard for me to do that. With the exception of one bartender “Ann,” (Thank you Ann! We love you), I have never had a good experience at the bar. Although the poor service in the past was not enough for me to write about last night my friends and I had an awful time. We went into the bar around 10:00pm to have a few drinks and catch up with one another. When I went to the bar the bartender was rude and did not say anything to me (this is normal there). He served two guys who came up after me and who were standing behind me before he got to me. I opened a tab and we had 3 rounds of drinks. Each and every time we went back to the bar to get more drinks the bartender was rude and condescending. At 11:00pm we asked to cash out, I got the tab gave him a 10% tip and wrote “poor service” on the tab to explain why the tip was so low (We are great tippers if we get good service). When the bartender got the tab he charged out from behind the bar and got into my face to ask me to explain the poor service. I told him he was rude and condescending and he made us all uncomfortable. With that he got even madder he told us to get out of the bar or he was going to call the cops then charged off to the bar again. My friends and I had full drinks that we had already paid for and were going to finish them then leave. Before we could even take one more drink he came back yelling at us to get out then he ripped the drinks right out of our hands. I am sad to say that my friends and I will never go back and we will be spending our money else where. [04 Jan 2007 12:21:47]
