There's no reason to complain about the food at B.D.'s Mongolian Barbecue--after all, you prepare it. - CitySearch - suggest change

What's a They give you a bowl, and you fill it with various raw ingredients and spices from a buffet, take it to the 'chefs', and they stir-fry (not BBQ) it for you.
The ingredients buffet has a very wide selection. If you're not a creative cook, they provide some tips and basic recipes.
The atmosephere is fun and loud; the waitstaff has that Bennigans/TGIF/Chili's/Etc fun and vibrancy. I like taking young nieces and nephews here, because it's much more fun than ordering and sitting quietly at the table, waiting ...
On the downside, lines are always long, it seems, and some wonder why they pay to make their own food. [01 Dec 2003 18:37:07]

Better than Most in the Chain.... This place was busy before it obtained a liquor license. Now it is typically packed.
Like others in the chain, it is an all-you-can-eat buffet, where you select ingredients and spices for stir-fry and have them cooked up on a massive wok. If you have food allergies (especially peanuts or shrimp) you can (and *must*) request that they cook your food in a regular wok that they keep for such purposes.
If you have eaten at the other "Mongolian Barbecue" restaurants, you will be pleased that the ingredients here are a step up from the norm. The Ann Arbor market is a bit more finicky than most. At the same time, unless you follow a recipe or are good at selecting ingredients, some people complain that all of the dishes end up tasting pretty much alike. (This is *not* true if you follow recipes or understand the oils and seasonings provided, although the cooking technique does homogenize flavors to some degree.)
A big "ew" from my perspective was seeing the cooks tap the working ends of their "cooking sticks" on the floor in between preparing entrees.
From my perspective, the atmosphere is a bit noisy and crowded, the lines too long, and the prices such that I would rather go to a good Asian restaurant and simply order off of the menu. However, if you want that buffet experience, it is a cut above its brethren [05 Jul 2002 04:00:32]

Great Job I loved the dishes that I ate. The wait wasn't real long, but I understand the times and how hard the people try to get in everyone as soon as they can to a table. The service was great, no problems, they were very nice and always was there just in case if I had a question. The whole place was clean, I find nothing wrong at all. [10 May 2003 23:04:24]

Excellente! This restaurant is absolutely amazing. Great food, great service, great locations. The food is prepared on a huge grill, so that people can be entertained while waiting for their food. The waiters are buzzing with hospitality. This is a wonderful place, for any meals at any time. [22 Oct 2003 12:02:29]

Good standard BD's I've eaten at quite a few BD's. This was very good, but noisy. IT was a lunchtime during the week and we still had to wait in line to get our food grilled. All considered - very good experience. [12 Aug 2005 17:20:58]

A noise factory The food itself is not bad, of standard quality. One makes their concoction from a WIDE array of ingredients, so it takes some work choosing and assembling your meal, then one stands in line until one reaches the LARGE closed flame grill and then wait around the gril while the grillers do their thing.
In general, those under 21 love the place and those over 21 do not. Be aware, the consistent decibel level in the restaurant is deafening. [13 Sep 2005 12:51:03]
Food: Service: Ambiance: Overall: Recommended Dishes: I have found that I usually create a better dish by following BD's suggested recipes than by creating my own 'clever' original dishes.
