A Unique Flavor in a Typical Midwest Town
This small non-smoking restaurant has quickly become one of my favorite spots in Battle Creek. The staff makes you feel like you are a special guest, they are always prompt and courteous. Feel not afraid to inquire about the unusual foods, they will help you through your selection. The assorted appetizer is a treat for your taste buds, and offers enough for two to share happily and try new things. Most of the wait staff is Hindu and are recent immagrants from India, so listening carefully is advised for ears unused to the accent. All speak English well, it is a matter of paying attention, not half listening like most people do. Recommended is the chicken corma, and the barbequed eggplant. Nice selection for vegitarians, and plenty of lamb, chicken and seafood dishes for the omnivore. There is no beef served. I hope you will try this wonderful little place, for those a little leary at lunchtime they have a buffet that lets you sample all their wares.    [16 Oct 2004 21:03:17]

Variety is the Spice Here!
We've been waiting so long for something other than burgers, pasta and fried foods of every kind and now we can rejoice! For even the complete novice to Indian cuisine can enjoy a truly delicious meal. Laura is correct when she's says you cannot be a casual listener here, and you are treated as a special guest every time. Most of the selections allow you to choose your level of spice (other than the vindaloo offerings, they're all quite spicy.) Those opposed to curry will find many other delicious options. The restaurant itself has transformed what was a fast food place in its previous life into a mini-Indian excursion. You'll never be rushed, the lunch buffet is never the same and very reasonably priced. Our thanks to the owners for bringing us closer to this wonderful segment of our ever shrinking world!    [30 Sep 2005 11:25:09]

Completely unexpected in Battle Creek
Looking for a restaurant to visit before a recent show at Kellogg Arena, I was very surprised to learn that Battle Creek now has an Indian restaurant. And a decent one, at that.

Arriving shortly after opening on that Saturday night we were seated promptly at a comfortable table and given a basket of crispy papadam.

My customary mango lassi had a slight fizziness to it which made it seem a lighter drink than at other places. It was a nice variation.

The paneer pakora we had as an appetizer had a light and crispy coating around soft, tasty cheese.

My only disappointment of the visit was that my "medium" lamb saag seemed more salty than spicy. The salt flavor seemed rather pronounced in this dish, since that taste was more evident in the sauce than the meat. The meat was tender and pleasant, but the sauce was not quite the taste I was expecting from my experiences with this dish elsewhere.

My wife described her malai kofta as "absolutely divine", with tender fritters, plenty of golden raisins and a sauce that seemed multi-layered for its variety of subtle flavors. Having a taste of it, I agreed. The next time we are in town, I'll be ordering that.

The service was attentive, with the only "points off" being for it taking a while to get our bill.

As for atmosphere, the place looks nicer on the inside than on the outside, as is the case with a lot of the businesses in its neighborhood. It was clean and modern, without going over the line to pretentious levels of upscale decor.    [18 Nov 2005 13:54:48]
