Check please? First of all the funny thing about going to this restaurant is that I was going to be writing a review on it any way for a class I’m taking. Any way I went on a Sunday afternoon with some friends after church got out. This place is packed by the way on Sunday afternoon. So we wait to be seated over twenty minutes, which isn’t bad really. It did give us time to look the place over and it really is a great atmosphere. First off is of course the fact that it’s an old church so there is stained glass and beautiful woodworking about. Other interesting items were the pew seating where some had been converted to booths and others to regular seating. There are lots of other cool eye catching things every where like a vintage room for sitting including cushioned chairs from the nineteen twenties and a seemingly misplaced disco ball. An old bingo light up board hangs on the far wall as you stand there waiting for your table. They actually use it with the bar on Saturday nights, games are free. When we actually were seated we learned on Sunday afternoon they only serve breakfast which I found a little odd but they do open up at night to serve dinner. I ordered something they call the plowman's plate. A lunch item featured on the breakfast menu. I ordered a coke to go with, as I am not 21 yet. When I got my drink it tasted funny and I asked if I could get a new one I was then informed by our waitress that’s the way it should taste all there fountain drinks taste funny. She offered a draft root beer instead I accepted. The root beer was good it had a sort of velvety texture to it. While we sat and waited for our food I happened to notice the bar (for all you drinkers out there) had around 20 beers on tap and about 40 bottles to choose from so you're not short on choice domestic or imported on a Saturday night. After waiting for our food for about an hour we were informed they lost our ticket and were making our food now. The manager told us that they would take care our drinks for us though, three-dollar losses on their part woo hoo! During the course of our time being there service was shoddy at best and the food was not that impressive. Nine fifty for a bowl of deli turkey, vegetables and a hunk of cheese for me, they also forgot to give me part of my order. My companions said there food was not too impressive either. At any rate this place is not short on charm of the atmoshpere but does lack as far as service and overall food quality. I don’t think I’m going back. [03 Dec 2002 13:48:45]

My experiences here have been great. Eclectic menu, interesting atmosphere, and good food. This place is kind of "trendy but not trendy". [13 Feb 2003 13:29:19]

Great Time ....sit at the bar! I recently moved back to Michigan and remembered visiting the "U" nion and thought to see how things have changed. Not much, thankfully. This is not fine dining...but then again only a fool would think that. The food is exceptional and the beer selection is outstanding. The difference was most of the bartenders and servers are still there. After 3 years that said a lot. Amy (bartender) is a sweetheart and took excellent care of us. I'll be back soon! Clarkston Union, the place to be!!! The Union is the place to relax in Downtown Clarkston. Not only is the atmosphere great, the options for entertainment are excellent. If you're in for a quiet dinner in downtown, sit on the patio; if you're in for a couple drinks with some friends, sit at the bar; if you're on a casual date, sit at one of the many pews! The food is always excellent, and service is great. Most of the kids, and adults, that work there eat there, so they know what to offer if you ask. The fountain drinks only taste weird every once in a while, so don't let that scare you.
However, some appetizers take longer to cook then the meals, so be sure to ask for an appetizer right away and then look for a main course. Although the menu is rather small, all of the choices are excellent. Now the prices aren't small, I can gaurantee that, as a single (1/2) serving of macaroni and cheese is $5. But, hey! Isn't that a fair price for great food?
My, only complaint, the potatoes.... Eat them, you'll see what I mean... [30 Jul 2003 02:07:34]

Clarkston Union The Union is a great place....service is not always the best and the wait is usually long but the food is excellent. There are always specials and we look forward to a different type of cuisine...shark...duck...buffalo, well you get the picture. The prices are not cheap but the meals are large and filling...the mac and cheese is the best!! [14 Feb 2004 13:30:16]

I love this place!! I should state for the record that I am a beer geek, so the beer selection (bottle & draught) alone earns this place 4 stars.....
However, the food is also great! Love the mac n cheese, the grilled cheese w/ brie, and their soups are always great!
My husband & I came here alot before we were married & had great nights sampling beer, eating oysters (did I mention the raw bar on weekends? best oysters I have ever had) and talking. We loved it so much we came here on our wedding day....the place was wonderful! Owner bought us champagne & we have a great picture of us & our wedding party at the bar!!
The bartenders are wonderful!! I really can't say enough great things about this place. It does get busy on the weekends, but do know that you can wait downstairs and play free pool until you have a table. Although they have limited taps down there, you can also get anything that they have upstairs.
Again, this place is awesome! [27 Jan 2005 13:36:55]

Yuppies served all day long!!! I'm not sure what kind of food most people expect, but do not come to this place unless you are not hungry. Beer... plenty, food- horrible. How can you mess up a platter of cheese and cold shrimp? Well they sure did. The crackers were stale, the cheese was dried out, and the shrimp were water logged and tasteless. I'd say the only way you would think the food here is good is after you have had your fill of overpriced beers on tap. (How does it take an hour for a cheese plate?) [20 Apr 2006 14:38:26]

Always worth the wait! Hard to believe the negative reviews I've read. The Union is on our list of "sure things" when choosing to eat out. The food is excellent and always filling. The fact that nothing on the menu is deep fried, makes it even better. The Sunday Breakfast menu is very unique and always a tasteful surprise. Beware though, since it's housed in an old church with a cathedral ceiling, the noise factor can be a bit much if you're not in the mood. Lunchtime is a little quieter. My friends and family would all highly recommend stopping in for a look, drink or meal. It's all appealing! [16 Nov 2006 16:54:29]
