A hidden gem I have had the pleasure of eating at Altu's three times this year. While the restaurant doesn't look like much from the parking lot (it is the end unit in a small, older strip mall east of Frandor Shopping Center), it hides within its walls a selection of Ethiopian dishes that competes very well with better-known Ethiopian restaurants, such as Blue Nile, and for a considerably lower price.
Altu Tadesse makes wonderful Ethiopian stews that make this curry-fiend's mouth water just thinking about them. Even though I have considered myself a lifelong carnivore, I think that the vegetarian dishes stand out from an exceedingly good menu, in particular the lentil dishes. While simple, they pack a remarkable amount of flavor. I am very fond of lamb, and the spicy lamb does not disappoint.
The feast dinners are truly the best way to try out the various dishes, and the approach my wife and I take when dining at Altu's.
The dining room is small, but the crowds are friendly, especially during the Saturday night musical entertainment. While you wouldn't come to Altu's for the decor, the food is more than adequate reason to travel an hour or more (as we do) to eat here. [19 Sep 2005 20:58:31]
