Southgate's Hungarian Rhapsody almost has a patent on the paprikas and gulyas, the palacsinta and noodle dishes of Budapest - The Detroit News, By Molly Abraham; Steve and Darlene Szatmari opened their restaurant in 1993 with some trepidation. Would they be able to make a go of it? Could enough people be attracted to Northline Road, a location certainly off the beaten track for the majority of Metro Detroiters? To illustrate how far the hard-working couple has come, two Sundays ago, the Szatmaris and their now expanded staff served 900 Sunday dinners, requiring the roasting of 120 chickens for the paprikas alone. And it was an average Sunday. - suggest change

WONDERFUL
WONDERFUL place - food like my grandma used to make. Beautiful surroundings, very authentic. Nice wait staff, and we had an absolutely wonderful time EVERY TIME WE'VE BEEN THERE!

Anyone who doesn't like this place must be nuts!    [23 Aug 2004 21:31:05]

Best Food Around
(My spouse's family distantly related to owner, who is well known since he used to cook for Hungarian Club).

Best homecooking downriver. Decorated with Hungarian arts and crafts, has booths and tables. Bread basket with sweet butter, fine coffee. Generous servings of paprikas, goulash, stuffed cabbage. Homestyle chicken soup daily, yummy cream of mushroom on Thursday. Groups of six or more can get family style service (ask waitress, not on menu). He makes his desserts: walnut buttercream torte, and kremisch (pastry filled with a whipped cream custard) etc. The back room always filled with showers and parties. Sometimes you hear gypsy music back there. Only weakness: instant mashed potatoes, and, ladies room has cloth towel machine you yank and pull out scary mystery cloth that you hope wasn't cranked in by the last user.    [03 Mar 2001 22:27:51]

did I go into the wrong restaurant?
I stopped by on Saturday afternoon, 2-16-2002 on the recommendation of earlier reviews. I ordered the chicken paprikas dinner. The chicken was a little chewy, like it had been made yesterday? The paprikas sauce taste like it came out of a can, I couldn't feel the taste of the fresh sour cream flavor leaping at me. Nor did the paprika spice reach out and grab my taste buds, like it should have. The lettuce on my salad was a little wilted, although the tomato slice and the green pepper was alright. And my tea? well it ran down the side of the teapot onto the table, just like it does in every other restaurant. A five star superb restaurant? - I think not. Previous reviewers are overly generous with their rating. this is a 3 star restaurant.    [16 Feb 2002 17:56:43]

Superb
Steve and Darlene Szatmari have done just what they needed to do to create a great restaurant - in keeping with Steve's traditions - for the rest of us to enjoy. Steve studied culinary arts in his native Budapesh and then worked here in such fine places as the Hyatt Regency and the Hungarian Club, with Darlene joining him. (We learned this from the news clipping on the wall, although Steve, himself, did drop by our table to say hello and to answer all our questions.) The two, Darlene and Steve, have had just the right culinary instincts and business acumen to have created a lasting first rate ethnic restaurant that Detroit can be proud of. We just ate there tonight (2/1/03) for the first time and, although our first visit was expensive, we will go back. Our family had Chicken Paprikas, Hungarian Goulash, Stuffed Cabbage, Potato Noodles, Veal crepe, cucumber salad, sausage and cheese appetizer, and two desserts - apricot crepes and rum cake - and other accompaniments. The Hungarian among us said his food was great and very authentic. It made him happy. So much so that we bought extra Kolbasz and cheese to bring home with us for his traditional Hungarian breakfasts, as long as it lasts. The restaurant atmosphere was very pleasant, although a bit noisy on this crowded night. We knew right away from the crowded parking lot that this was going to be a hit, and it was. The authentic Hungarian decorations were also an enjoyable part of the experience and brought our memories back to our visit to Budapest this summer. We could even almost see our two-week residence near the Parliament across the river from the Fisherman's Bastion in the large painting on the wall. The service was also excellent, and we fairly tested our waitress with a zillion questions and requests. The busboy was even very courteous and responsive to our needs.
We have tested two other Transylvanian restaurants in the area and this is by far head and shoulders over the others, although they were by no means bad.    [01 Feb 2003 21:38:05]

Disgusted
I was not impressed what-so-ever. I walked in to see food all over the floor. The atmosphere smells like a funeral home. The wait staff is rude. The chicken paprikas was rather chewy and I was a little disgusted that the meat is left on the bones. My wife got the stuffed cabbage, and the meat inside was pink and cold. I saw the owner cussing at his employees. You can tell he has an ego.    [20 Apr 2003 20:06:24]

I Couldn't Believe It!
I went to the restaurant as part of a big gathering. On my bill I was paying for myself and two others. The food was Ok. Not exactly what I expected. The shocker was when I went online and checked my online billing.....I rounded my bill up to $50 to give the waitress a decent tip....I go online and I guess they didn't like my tip and decided to add an extra dollar. Yes its only a dollar but it was not theirs to just take! I will never go back again. One dollar just caused them alot more as far as myself and my friends and family goes.    [21 Nov 2003 20:02:21]

My family and I have known the Szatmari's for over a decade. We have eaten at their restaurant more times than I can count. Everything is always excellent. If there is ever an issue Steve or Darlene will make a mends immediately. Food quality and service is what they strive for. Love everything about the place.    [16 Nov 2006 17:48:27]

Very Good Service On A Busy Day
We had reservations for 17 at 1pm on Mother's Day. The place was packed. Because of the size of our party we were in the banquet room with about 9 other large groups. The waitresses were very efficient and also very understanding of delays (one of our party was almost 40 minutes late). Our group split between the family style entrees of breaded veal, chicken paprikas and stuffed cabbage and a two single meals. I usually eat here only 2 or 3 times a year because it's an hour from my home but I've never had a bad meal or bad service.

The reviewer above that mentioned the pink meat in the stuffed cabbage should know that that meat is a combination of ground beef an ground pork and it can have a pinkish tint even when fully cooked. Our party was quite happy and the servers topped off the day by presenting each female in our group with a carnation for Mother's Day. While it was jam-packed with narrow aisles and quite noisy, we had a very nice celebration there with mom. (I still like Mom's chicken paprikas better, but this is a reasonable substitute.) There are not a lot of Hungarian Restaurants around, and having grown up in a Hungarian family I can tell you that this is good stuff!

If you're hungry and in a group, go with the 'family style' - 2 entrees (or pay extra for a third as we did) and get plenty of sides, mashed potatoes, chicken paprikas gravy, green beans and small dumplings (we called them Nokkedli growing up). They throw in a small piece of torte for dessert, too.    [14 May 2007 14:34:37]
