For the uninitiated, the classic Chung's egg rolls are a treat I used to brave the Cass Corridor after many a late-night concert as a young man just for these, even though they are a bit greasy - it's part of the charm. Misshapen, handmade, heavy (cabbage) and worthy, even though I usally prefer the beansprout variety, which they do offer.

Food is very well prepared and rises above the standard fare chinese-on-the-corner with attention to preparation and use of herbs & spices. My Szechuan Green Breans were reminiscent of Pad Prik King (Thai dish) with the flavorful ring of basil - something you might not expect. The vegetables were properly (i.e. not overcooked) done, meat tender, sauce not overpowering, but spot-on with flavor. Dishes are mostly what you'd expect (nothing exotic), but done better than most places. Bonus points for featuring a sushi bar and not a bad one at that,if a little pricey.

The lunch menu dishes are a steal; a friend and I split a sushi appetizer and we each had a combo plate...damage was barely over $20. I had forgotten about this place as it's not on my usual traffic routes, but we needed a local spot for lunch and my memory kicked back in. I'm glad it did!    [16 Jun 2006 13:09:31]
