Decent food, decent prices, decent place Cafe Ole is located approximately 1 mile west of I-55 in a colorful little building in the heart of Batesville's commercial corridor. Parking is a little tight, but there is plenty of parking next door, at a strip mall.
Cafe Ole offers standard Mexican fare in a typically decorated restaurant. There are various Mexican knick-knacks here and there, some blankets and sombreros and of course, televisions showing Mexican futbol or soap operas.
The front of the restaurant is the smoking section; the non-smoking is off to the right as you enter. Despite being sectioned, smoke does occasionally waft into the non-smoking area.
The building is not particularly large and a little bit intimate. The dark corners and low light add to the ambience.
As typical, salsa and chips are provided free. The salsa is tasty and has a slightly spicy bite. It's a little chunky, too.
The food is pretty standard Mexcian fare, with a selection of enchiladas, burritos, tacos, rellenos and the like. Most entrees are served with rice and beans, and the main dish is usually covered in cheese sauce. There are also some special steak selections available during dinner hours. Desserts are available for those with hearty appitites.
Most entrees are offered with a choice of beef, chicken and sometimes steak. Cafe Ole's beef is wonderful. It is very finely ground and lightly seasoned. The texture and flavor combination is very pleasing and fits well whether in a burrito or taco.
The steak bistec is also good. A thin beef steak is marinated and grilled to your specification. Despite being a less-tender cut, the seasoning and char-grilled flavor make this a good choice.
Although the service has been spotty, it is generally prompt and accurate. Drinks aren't always kept refilled, but the glasses are large so this isn't usually a problem. The sweet tea is generally good. [15 Mar 2007 12:57:36]
