Standard Southern fare from a chain restaurant Cracker Barrel Old Country Store has just about perfected the "home cooking, chain style" of restaurants.
This particular location is not one my favorites, but is the only one for a hundred miles from my home.
Generally speaking, you can expect fresh-tasting home-cooked southern-style food from Cracker Barrel, like chicken and dumplings, meatloaf, roast beef and gravy, chicken fried steak and fried chicken. There is always a good selection of vegetables, including a vegetable of the day. They are all usually well seasoned and tasty if not quite like real home cooking.
They also serve breakfast anytime.
This particular location seems to suffer from portion size problems. Several times I've received paltry servings of turnip greens or mac & cheese, as well as tiny portions of the roast beef. On one occasion, I ordered meatloaf and was greeted with a surprisingly large portion.
Specific to this location as well, they sometimes service vegetables that don't taste very fresh, or taste old.
Unlike most Cracker Barrels, the tea isn't very good here, either. It's not very sweet and often weak. Of course, they do serve a full compliment of Coca-Cola soft drinks, as well as Stewart's root beer in glass bottles, coffee, orange juice and milk.
Although this location seems to suffer some conformity issues, it's still pretty good if you're craving southern cooking. [15 Mar 2007 12:34:47]
