Southern-style food served buffet style. Although the restaurant has a small menu one can order from, the big draw seems to be the buffet, which serves a small variety of meats and veggies, along with salads and a few desserts.
Since this was my first visit, I decided to try the buffet and sample a bit of everything.
The salad bar had the standard salad offerings, nothing special. The salad would have been good, but the lettuce was warmer than I'd like to see.
The meats served were fried chicken, some type of round steak with onions and catfish.
Although it wasn't particularly appetizing to look at, the steak and onions were actually very good. The brown gravy was thick and flavorful without being too salty. The hamburger steaks looked mechanically formed into perfectly-round servings but were tender and tasty. The fried chicken was in a huge pan, stacked high. The skin was slightly dry, but the meat was tender and juicy. It was still quite hot even after sitting on my plate for several minutes. Finally, the catfish was average at best. Some smaller pieces were overcooked.
The selection of vegetables was good but not very extensive. There were green beans, turnip greens, black-eyed peas, macaroni & cheese and white rice.
The macaroni and cheese was decent if not a bit underwhelming. Likewise, the turnip greens were rather plain and bit limp. The black-eyed peas were unusual, served in a fairly thick sauce which was tangy and flavorful.
Rolls and cornbread were served. The rolls tasted store-bought and not very fresh.
For dessert, there was peach cobbler or chocolate cake. A soft-serve ice cream dispencer was tucked away from the buffet in a corner of the restaurant. No one visited it the entire time I dined so I am not sure if it even works.
The chocolate cake reminded me of the cake I had in high school - rather institutional and bland. Another diner commented that the peach cobbler was mediocre at best.
The service was attentive and friendly on my visit, and the sweet tea was very good. The tables were fairly clean, too. The restaurant is in the old Western Sizzlin location and has kept that chain's aged decor.
Overall, it is a decent place if you're looking for a family friendly place where you can pick and choose what you want to eat. The quality is just average, but the price is good. My check for two people with drinks was just over $17. [15 Mar 2007 12:00:59]
