So there *is* decent Chinese food in Grenada after all! Great Wall is not what you'd call an ostentatious place. Tucked inbetween a GNC and a loan place, it doesn't look like much. In fact, it isn't much at all. Just a few booths and one of those overhead picture-menus that are so typical of smaller Chinese establishments.
After a busy day of shopping I decided to stop in and get some plates to go for the rest of the family.
The entire order (two General Tso's Chicken, one Sweet and Sour and three eggrolls) came to just $18.80, which is very reasonable.
The food was ready after just a short wait, and since the total was over $18, they threw in two free cans of soft drink, which was nice. The server was also generous with the sauce packets.
The eggrolls were much larger than is typical, perhaps two and quarter inches around. They were filled with coarse shredded cabbage; if there was any meat in them, it was too finely diced to be noticeable. They were generally well received although one diner thought his was too greasy.
The sweet and sour chicken seemed to go over well, but the red sauce wasn't very sweet. If you find other sweet and sour sauces to be too sickly-sugary, this one might suit your palate better. Personally, I prefer the sickly-sweet kind.
The General Tso's chicken was also liked, with the chicken's batter remaining crispy despite being drenched in the typical thick, dark Tso's sauce. The sauce was just spicy enough to have some bite thanks to several flakes of red pepper, but wasn't as spicy as some other establishments' versions of this ubiquitous dish. Each plate of Tso's chicken was garnished with exactly two brocolli spears.
Each plate came with pork fried rice. In fact, it seemed like everything to-go came with pork fried rice. It was decent enough, with little cubes of pork, but was nothing special. The yellow rice was a bit dry in places and the dish seemed to lack bits of egg or other accompanyments typical of a fried rice dish.
Overall, Great Wall is a good place to go to satisfy a craving for Chinese if you don't want to leave Grenada. Compared to all the Chinese restaurants I've eaten at (and that's a *lot*) it's pretty average, but compared to what's in Grenada, it is the hands-down winner. If you want Chinese restaurant atmosphere, you'll be stuck with "the other place" but for actual decent food, this is the only choice. [18 Jun 2008 21:41:09]
