Good sandwiches with a cajun flair Maybe it's just me, but I got the impression from the Oby's signage and buildings that it might be a German-American hybrid sandwich chain. It must be the "newspaper banner" font on the Oby's sign that threw me off.
Inside, it's dark wood paneling and exposed roof beams. Almost ski-lodge like, if you will.
Much like other sandwich shops in the region, you order from a large menu board at the back of the restaurant, take a number and your food is delivered right to the table.
On this trip my dining partner and I opted to start with an appetizer. Oby's offers several variations on the french-fry theme, including chili cheese, Rotel cheese and the Ultimate Fries. We opted for the Ultimate - Applewood bacon, melted cheddar and Monterrey Jack, onions and a side of ranch dressing. Once delivered, it didn't seem to be a whole lot of food; halfway through we began to re-assess that notion. It was certainly enough for two, possibly three to share. The seasoned waffle fries make an ideal vehicle for all these toppings and was a great start to the meal.
For our sandwiches, my diner opted for the Ultimate Chicken Club, which features Oby's fried chicken tenders. They are topped with Applewood bacon, cheddar and Monterrey Jack cheeses, onion, lettuce, tomato, mayo and honey mustard. She said it was very good, with a nice breading on the chicken and a tangy honey mustard.
I opted for the Cajun Shrimp Po-Boy. Tartar and cocktail sauces are available on the side. The French bread was wonderful. Chewy and fresh on the inside and slightly crusty on the outside. The shrimp were large and coating with a standard seafood breading, but didn't taste exceptionally fresh.
Each sandwich plate comes with a side; my dining partner chose fries for some reason, but I opted for the potato salad. It was a very good choice, tangy and with a nice texture. The potatoes were small chunks and soft but not mushy - perfect. Possibly the best potato salad I've had dining out in a good while.
Southerners that we are, we opted for the sweet tea and it was fresh and perfectly sweetned. Oh, and served in a nice big cup, with free refills.
If I lived closer to Oby's, it would easily be my favorite sandwich & more joint. The cajun influence adds a little more depth to the usual deli-type menu and the interior makes for a comfortable dining experience. Prices are fairly reasonable, too. [31 Jul 2007 19:40:00]
