Delicious, Fun, & Unique
An extremely popular location among the locals, El Sombrero is a must see for anyone visiting Vicksburg. The essentials of Mexican cuisine are all there, tacos, burritos, flautas, enchiladas, chimichangas, rice and beans. These basics are tasty and very inexpensive. But if you’re budget is a little looser, and you have a bit of the adventurer in you, I suggested straying from the Lunch and Dinner specials. The deeper into the menu you peruse, the stranger and more eclectic the choices become. The fried burritos and enchiladas are incredibly flavorful, but my favorite meal by far is the Combination Fajitas. Steak, chicken, chorizo sausage and shrimp are combined with onions, chilies, tomatoes, and green peppers to create an explosion of flavors so spicy and sensual, they can only be found south of the border.    [09 Nov 2005 15:08:40]

Maybe, We were There on a Bad Day
..But maybe we're spoiled. We are used to having Tex-Mex from San Antonio. We did order "to go", and that may have effected the look but it shouldn't have impacted the flavor. My husband had the Beef Fajita Plate, the veggies were washed out from over cooking, the meat was bland. The rice was ok, no great shakes and the beans were runny, my husband equated it to McDonald's. I had the combination plate. The cheese enchilada was good. I didn't like the beef or chicken enchilada. The plate said it was Enchiladas Verdes, which is of course, Green Enchiladas wich are Chicken enchiladas with a green sauce, not three enchiladas. The rice and beans were the same as my husband's. They do have a good salsa.    [10 May 2006 17:25:04]

Better then Texas
I've been to Texas many of times and ate what they call BbQue and Mexican food. I'm not impressed. They have good meat but sad taste. From experience the best blend of spices come from Louisiana and Mississippi. The Vicksburg resturant stated above rocks with food and price. The El Sombrero brand is home grown in Mississippi and is just simple the best in the deep south. They are consistent every time. and just simple run a better experience then any Texas Mexican rest. visit and come back and post people.    [07 Aug 2006 20:15:20]

Good food marred by poor service
Quick Review:

The menu is a nice mix of the known and slightly unusual, food wise.

My dining companion enjoyed her chicken fajitas, which were large chunks of marinated chicken instead of strips. The chicken was tender and plentiful. In fact, there was probably more chicken than onions and peppers!

She also enjoyed the guacamole, which was a bit spicy.

The other diner enjoyed his combination platter, which featured a relleno, flauta and burrito. Each earned high marks in the flavor department, although he was puzzled over the relleno. It was a big glop of meat and cheese with just a tiny portion of pepper. We weren't sure if that was how they prepared the dish or if there was an accident and the pepper fell apart.

I chose the enchiladas tapaties, a variety including cheese, chicken, beef and bean. Each was very tasty. There was a noticeable 'dry spice' flavor in the sauce, which was unusual but wonderful.

Last but not least, they serve a wonderful spicy salsa.

Although the food was wonderful and prices reasonable, the service was abominable. We asked for a refill of chips and salsa, which never arrived. Our server only came to the table to take our order, deliver the food and deliver the check.

In addition to the poor service, the restaurant was too warm, which made for an uncomfortable experience.

The restaurant seemed to be in a bit of disrepair; the ultra-cheap blind on the window by our table was splattered with dried sauce. It's also worth noting the blinds offered practically no shade from the incoming sun.

All in all, I would actually go back to this restaurant simply because the food was so good. Unfortunately, it would be an exercise in pain due to the unattentive service.

Finally, it is worth noting that a new location is currently under construction (06/08) just down the street. It looks to be much larger than the current location, which was busy despite being an "off hour" for dinner.    [05 Jun 2008 11:29:56]
