Excellent food and service My wife and I weren't expecting a fourstar meal when we were dining in Livingston, MT, but the Sport certainly delivered. I had the prime rib which rivals (if not beats) any NY restaurants. My wife had the french onion which she said "was to die for." Not only was meal delicious and way too cheap, but the service was out of this world. In particular the bartendar named P.J. He made us the best mixed drinks and was very attentive to our needs. It was very special when he brought out his fish artwork, which rivals anything I've ever seen. If you get the chance eat there when P.J. is working. [12 Jul 2002 22:05:39]

Excellent Food Family Friendly My family and I were passing through Livingston on the way to Yellowstone and stopped at The Sport. We never expected to find such fabulous food and such a warm family-friendly place to eat. The restaurant interior is like something out of an old-West movie. The kids loved the grilled cheese and were given plenty of crayons and fresh veggies to munch on while we waited. I had the ribs (UNBELIEVABLE!) and my husband had a burrito (huge-actually too big)! The french fries are also tasty! We had apple pie to finish and were told that it was "Mom's recipe." Good pie! [04 Jan 2005 17:53:53]

Its not the same! We found out the the Sport again changed hands - the most recent owners had really upgraded the place, cleaned up the antiques, and menu to include tons of great fresh homemade tex mex and grilled items. The new owners have taken out (or sold?) many of the antiques and tried to make the place "upscale" - which only seems to mean "more expensive".
We gave the new owners a try and found the food to be poorly prepared and not fresh! The burger tasted old and "plasticky" as if it had freezer burn. The salads were wilted and slimey and the pork chop burned on the outside and raw on the inside. Plus, our female server was not well groomed and lazy!
Don't be fooled! The good reviews you may hear about are not in line with the current owners. The old owners were great but the new owners have really let the place run down. Its a shame. [10 May 2006 15:58:46]

The SPORT comes up short This joint used to be one of my favorite Montana hangouts. Back when Suzanne and Eric Hirsckorn ran it, it was fun and the food pretty good. They sold to Jim and Cynthia Kohler and the menu improved with some excellent Texmex hot food, although I kinda missed some of the old menu item, like the trout and poppers. Oh well - now for the bad news.
The restaraunt and bar that WAS next door changed hands to a pair of fellows, one of whom has a little toy doberman that he let's have the run of the place, including all over the restaurant bar top. The bar next door closed down - I was told they couldn't make the payment in July, the height of the tourist season. They brought all the bar machines and pool tables and games into the historic atmosphere of the SPORT restaraunt and tried to turn it into some sort of low end casino/sleaze bar, completely ruining the 1890's atmosphere of this historic gem. They had the front doors completely throw open to cool it down (no AC), but the result was a fly convention that was in full congress. I literally couldn't shoosh them away from my drink. The bartender/waiter was hot and unconfortable, so I'll forgive his surlyness.
I was unimpressed with what had been done to this iconoclast eatery but I figured I'd give it a chance. I ordered the SPORT burger, a fairly safe standby. The burger came out fast enough, but was dry. The fries were warm, perhaps even cooler than the steamy surrounds. I took one bite and I lost my appetite and quickly paid the bill and left. I didn't even take time to complain since I didn't want to hang around that long. I went down to the new Mexican restaurant, Fiesta in Jalisco, where I got a wonderful plate of green chile pork medallions that were too big to believe in an authentic mexican atmosphjere served with grace and style by the owner, who obviously took great pride in what was being served.
I am totally sick about what has happened to the SPORT, almost as bummed as when they closed the M&M in Butte. Hopefully the M&M's fate will befall the SPORT and someone will get it that appreciates it's historic place in Montana. [22 Aug 2006 17:34:51]
