Good Comfort Food In A Flash Eating at the Blue Ribbon Diner feels like a flashback to the '50s. The walls are adorned with collectibles and old yearbooks from the local high schools.
The diner offers a blue plate special every day, and it's always some type of comfort food. They also offer a good selection of southern vegetables. Also on the menu are burgers and sandwiches, which are available as a basket (with fries) or plate (with fries and a small salad). The grilled chicken is marinated in a delightfully sweet juice. Try to save room for the great cobblers, chess pie or the Haw River Mud Pie.
The restaurant is always well staffed and the service is efficient and friendly. Be prepared for a line at lunch and dinner. Friday and Saturday evenings are especially busy.
My only complaint is that the owner hasn't paid attention to minor upkeep. When this place first opened, it sparkled. Today, there's a thick layer of dust on the blinds and the walls in the booths are grimy from years of service. A quick touch-up would get this place shining again. [04 Nov 2003 17:26:34]
