Good Food and Good Service The menu is "a-la-carte" though so it adds up quickly if you want something other than a huge steak. Plan on asking for a "to go" box early in the meal. I enjoyed portions of my steak, salad, broccoli, and garlic mashed potatoes but took most of it home. I am convinced that I could have subsisted on the take-home porion for at least a week if necessary and imagined myself in a lean-to shelter on the side of a mountain somewhere with this Ruth's Cris take home box. Excellent deal for large men, and women with "freezer savvy"! [29 Feb 2004 14:11:39]

Just alright I went with my parents and my children. It took a while for the drink service to come around, once they noticed us, our beverages came promptly. The waitress was putting on a pretentious air that I found annoying. She kept correcting my eleven year old daughter with her pronounciation of carpaccio (The waitress would pronounce the "i" and not the "ch" sound like the Italian) . My daughter has had carpaccio all over the world and has a fine palate. It was a little odd...came with a mustard drizzle rather than olive oil and parmesan, but was good none the less (more like a steak tar-tar flavour). My son ordered smoked salmon. His salmon was buried under a heap of chopped boiled egg. Once I dug out the 4 small, tail end pieces, he had his meal. The waitress had warned us that the appetizers are large, but not the fact that it would be a dish of chopped egg and salad with minimal salmon. The waitress did nothing to correct the problem when she notice us treasure hunting for a piece of salmon in a sea of egg. They seam to enjoy chopped egg at Ruth's. Even my daughter heart of palm and asparagus salad came heapped with egg and a couple of heart of palm pieces. The oyster Rockafellar was on the sweet side. The mushrooms were just plain button mushrooms, a little tiring. The side of asparagus was al dente and the highlight for us. The steaks were nothing spectacular, slightly over cooked and not very memorable (Filet and rib eye). No one could get their hands on the apple crumble was alright according to my son. The drink service was slow throughout the meal and the waitress was pretentious, which is uneccessary when a family is dining with children who wouldn't mind a smile instead of a robotic performance. Two Thumbs Down Fine dining should include excellent service. This restaurant misses the mark completely. We arrived on time for our 8PM reservation but had to wait 30 minutes to be seated. The curt hostess did not direct us to a bar or waiting area or even a chair. We found a bar on the 2nd floor, (the 1st floor bar was standing room only) where the bar tender yelled over our heads at a passing waiter that she was out of high ball glasses. We passed the time at the bar until we were seating at a table 8:30PM at which time I ordered a cup of hot tea and the waiter disappeared. At 8:45PM the manager appeared and we ordered drinks again and asked where our waiter was. The manager took our orders and by 9PM I had a cup of tea. The meal finally arrived at 9:30PM (not delivered by our waiter). We asked to speak to the manager. I was too upset to eat. The waiter appeared around 9:45PM to ask why I wasn't eating. I said we were fine, trying to avoid a confrontation with him, but he needled me for more info saying he was "getting a bad vibe." His bullying did not help my mood. The manager arrived around 10PM wondering why we were upset. Besides the fact that it was 10PM on a Saturday night and I was trapped in hell, I explained that service was sub-par and there had been unacceptable waits at every step of the dining process. By now I had tears in my eyes and asked for the check, which he comped. This was my boyfriend's birthday. Please don't entrust any special occasion to Ruth's Chris. It is not fine dining. It is a Jack-in-the-Box with valet service. From the snotty hostess, to the screaming bartender, to the disappearing waiter, to the oblivious manager, Ruth's Chris in Cary, NC does not measure up.
