It stands on railroad tracks and it's not much more than a cinder block shack. But this 'rant's got more personality in its little finger... Read Taylor Davenport's review - CitySearch - suggest change

Not Exciting I've had the BBQ sandwich on 15/501 once and won't go back. It was not exciting even though it was cheap. And the fries were disgusting. [10 Oct 2002 20:39:00]

Best BBQ in the Country I moved away from North Carolina 6 years after growing up in the area and the things I miss most are nature, friendly people, and Allen and Son bbq. Their pulled pork is amazing. I am so hungry thinking about it and it is more than 3000 miles away. The ribs are not the best, perhaps, but the pulled pork is hands down the best in the country and I have done some traveling. And of course you shouldn't get french fries at a bbq place. What was that guy thinking? [30 Apr 2003 15:03:02]

Not Bad, Not Bad At All I had been hearing of Allen & Son for a few years now, but until recently had not driven the 30 miles to Chapel Hill. It was definately worth the drive. Reminded me of childhood days-gone-by with its painted cinder blocks, checkerboard tablecloths and homey atmosphere. The barbecue was delicious with a bit of a kick to wake up the taste buds. Potato salad was just ok, but the french fries could have been saved for the seagulls. I will more than likely go back, if nothing else for the peach cobbler and pulled pork. [05 Jul 2003 14:10:13]

A Real Curiosity - Don't Miss We love this place! The wooded setting out in the sticks, by railroad track, gives a little bit of adventure and an excuse to drive a few miles out into the "country". Go across the railroad tracks and take a look at the little general store--too few of them are still left. We disagree with other reviewer's comments re quality of food. We felt that it stood up or exceeded quality of the best (outside of Lexington). His prices are low and quality exceeds the price. Excellent value for money. Plain chrome and Formica atmosphere seems to be a hold-out of a vanishing North Carolina.
Do go and try this joint! Also try his very good pies at a most reasonable price.
This same outfit has another operation on south 15-501 between Chapel Hill and Pittsboro. Food is the same but you don't get the same yesterday's atmosphere. [31 Dec 2003 00:18:28]

I've lived in Chapel Hill for 16 years, and I've eaten at Allen and Son's twice, teice too many. The bbq is so-so and everything else is soaked in grease. If you want GOOD bbq, fried chicken, potatoes, etc. you have to go to McCall's in Goldsboro or Emerald Isle. Next to that, Bill Ellis in Wilson is the best, Parker's a distant third. And don't waste you time at Wilber's, Don Murray's, or Old NC. For smoked bbq and great sauce try Danny's in Cary. No pulled bbq there though. [14 Mar 2004 23:29:11]

Best BBQ ever My family has been going to Allen & Son for going on 20 years now. While we aren't in NC any more, we still make trips down just for the BBQ. The last time, we picked up 10lbs, which barely lasted a month. Hands down the best BBq in the world. [06 Apr 2004 20:45:30]

There are TWO Allen and Sons in the same area And they are very different. The one on 15-501 cooks with gas, not smoking embers. The one at 6203 Millhouse Rd cooks the old fashion way with real smoking hickory embers. Most people rave over the latter and have not much to say about the former. [10 Dec 2004 16:42:13]

Superb Pork The barbecue pork is fabulous, and well worth the dirve. On your way out, go down to take a walk on the duke forest trails to walk off that great lunch or dinner. [05 Jul 2005 12:18:33]

Great Cue -- so so sides Best sandwich in the area -- the pig is fantastic! That's what really matters...
Sides are inconsistent -- poor fries, decent beans, pretty good okra.
Pecan Pie for dessert is worth getting-- but watch it-- it's hot!
Atmosphere is "Classic BBQ" -- old, dated, a mounted animal or two, gravel lot with everything from BMWs to beat up work trucks... just perfect. [17 May 2006 16:17:30]
