Expensive but worth the money I've eaten there on a few occasions. The restaurant is very classy, quiet, ritzy looking and elegant, lit mostly by candlelight, great for a romantic dinner. All I've ever eaten was the steak, which was cooked exact to order. The waiters and waitresses are attentive, without bothering you. They take care of you, but don't spend the whole time hounding you. Everything was prepared perfectly and all in all it's worth every penny spent. [05 Feb 2000 23:50:35]

Quite Good! Consistently well-prepared dinners. While known for their prime rib, I am a fan of the salmon. Also, don't let the extra dollar deter you: order the gorgonzola salad dressing. Delicious. The service is great, and the setting perfect for this little mountain town. [24 Jan 2002 16:49:26]

Hot Waitress I went with my wife and we had this beautiful waitress named KD who was a teacher at Pisgah, she was very helpful. She got a nice tip from me. [24 Jun 2005 18:54:13]

Not as good We have eaten at Manero's restaurant for years when Art Ternan owned it, the food was much better then J.R's ever could hope to be. A big disappointment including the management - they were not trained by their grandfather. [03 May 2003 11:33:52]

A Great Family I had the honor to work for this family for a year and I will say that I would work for them again if I was still in NC. Rick dedicates his life to that building and upholds the highest quality of service, food, drinks, and expects that of his employees. 1 bad review is tiny compared to the huge numbers of dinners his does in 1 night, everynight. Good meal We ate dinner there September 2005 and had really excellent prime rib.
My husband enjoyed the key lime pie. I had strawberry shortcake which was kind of odd -- vanilla ice cream and apparently frozen berries plus whipped cream on top of a piece of pound cake (?). Quite palatable, though.
Service was good. [24 Sep 2005 17:42:08]

Disappointed My husband and I have been dined twice on vacation and have not been pleased. The service is from the staff is great but the meals were not top of the line nor comparable to the price they charge. We expected a little more quality for our money as we intended on fine dining. We tried it twice to make sure it was just not a fluke the first time that we were not satisfied.
The atmosphere is wonderful. Beautiful building, nice and cozy as something you would expect in the Mountains. [10 Aug 2006 08:35:40]

Too Pricey * Mediocre Food My wife & I stopped in yesterday as it appeared to be the only restaurant that saw in the area that looked professionally run. The building is beautifully done in a country-like (Cracker Barrel-like) setting with a big front porch with rocking chairs. The inside has two floors, filled with country-style wooden chairs & tables. Very nice atmosphere.
You can expect $45-$50 for a party of two without appetizer, cocktails, or alcoholic beverage.
The atmosphere was good with the exception of being a bit noisy. Where we were sitting, we had difficulty hearing each other. Our table was between two other tables holding larger groups of noisy people. This could have been just a coincidence but it WAS rather annoying.
Our waitress was a bit on the chatty side. On more than one occasion during our meal we could not get her attention when needed as she was carrying on lengthy conversations with the large group seated to out side. I'm not sure, but it actually seemed as if she were friends with the party.
The service was rather slow as it seemed there was not enough wait staff. I will say that this could have been caused by the two larger parties that our server was handling. 25 minutes between ordering and getting our salads. Another 25 till the entrees arrive.
The menu actually has nothing special. No real signature dishes other than their "Gorgonzola Salad". I will say that the salad was delicious made with spring greens as well as iceberg lettuce topped with their Italian dressing containing the namesake cheese sprinkled throughout. The Prime Rib was good, but nothing special for the price of $20.95 for an 8 oz. slice. My wife had the Fish & Chips ($12.95) which consisted of a couple Fish Sticks/Patties served with Steak Fries.
They DO have a kid's menu for only $7.95 per child.
All-in-All: Decent food, Clean, Good Atmosphere, a little slow on service, & Pricey. [25 Jun 2007 14:46:27]
