Service Faux Pau
My mother and I went to New China a few months after it opened. It had been recommended to us by a friend. We went in and sat down. The atmosphere was basically Chinese, but some of the items looked a little too American. We were told to sit anywhere and picked a booth. We surveyed the buffet (more like a small cart), but the food on the buffet looked dry from heat lamps and picked over. We decided to stay anyway and try something off the menu. I ordered sweet and sour chicken and mom ordered another chicken meal. The wait for the food was extra long, considering only a few people were dining there during lunch. At one point during our wait, we saw them bringing our plates out of the kitchen and loading up the plates from the very buffet that we hadn't wanted to eat. We were upset, thinking that maybe we would get a better fresher meal if we ordered right off the menu, but in fact were served the old dry food off the cart. Had we wanted buffet food we could have just ordered the buffet. Being open-minded people, we thought "why spoil a nice day out" and that maybe the food on the buffet really wasn't as bad as it looked. They served us our chicken and rice with an egg role and we ate a little of the meal. After a few bites, my mother asked me if I wanted to finish mine. I told her no that the food tasted dry and the chicken tasted like it had been fried with fish. We asked for the check and they offered to box our meal. We took the boxed meals home, but ended up throwing them away since neither of us wanted to taste the horrible food again. We should have complained, but we're too nice. So now when people ask if there are any nice Chinese restaurants in town we don't recommend New China. We are still very put out over the service and the food. We warn people to not go there and tell them what happened to us (paying for a fresh meal and getting ripped off in the process).    [16 Feb 2004 13:47:12]
