Outrageous
If money is no object this place is good. We had reservations for four, but arrived and asked if we could add 1 to the party. This was not taken favorably but they did accommodate us. While waiting for the rest of the party I paid over $9 for a martini - outrageous! Three of us ordered a special that evening, which was filet with crabmeat. Two said the meat was delicious, one had fat in the meat. The price was over $30 each - again, outrageous. Softshell crabs, oysters, shrimp and salads were all delicous. I don't know about you, but after eating an expensive and for the most part delicious meal, I enjoy relaxing at the table, lingering over coffee, dessert, after dinner drinks, and conversation. We were literally hawked by the maitre d, ordering the busboy to remove anything that was not in our hands! Unfortunately I cannot give a restaurant a good recommendation with that type of treatment no matter how good the food was.    [31 May 2003 12:31:08]

I'd like to keep this place a secret - Steak 38
Arrived to be valet parked. Table was ready for us when we arrived. Said 'hi' to the huge live lobsters in the tank by the front door. Since it was summer time, it seemed like the help was seasonal and not sure of what to do, but the waitress we had was more then helpfully and quite funny. The wife and I had shrimp and steak. Everything was perfect. Highly recommend using the Ebay gift certificates the first time to get a feel for the place. We liked it enough to drive 50 minutes to go back. Meet one of the owners. Runs a great place and we told him so.    [04 Sep 2003 18:49:55]

Best Steak joint in Delaware Valley for the price.
We have recomended this well-kept secret among our friends. Portions are large, and the bar is always busy and friendly. They have great Blackend Steak and Seafood. You have to get the twice baked potat,o and don't miss dessert... the best Bananas Foster.    [12 Sep 2003 15:13:54]

Next Best thing to Steak in NYC
I have been eating here for several years. Filet and Crabmeat is a must try. Servers are always fun, friendly and fast. The bar is a fun place to hang out. Drinks are good, and the bartenders aren't your average guys! Everyone loves the Banana Foster for dessert, but I prefer chocolate cake! Hard to get in to, so make reservations at least a week in advance or you'll eat at 9:30 p.m. A little pricy for some, but if you are a true steak lover, you won't notice!    [22 Dec 2003 09:53:43]

Shhh, This Is Our Little Secret
If you didn't know it was there you'd drive right by. Good! That means I'll have a chance at getting in for dinner. Tiny place right on the main drag and I can't say enough. Yummy! Nice people, attentive service, A+++++ all the way!    [06 Jan 2004 19:11:41]

If you want horrible customer service.....
In a service intensified industry where competition is high and substitutions are abundant, it is a wonder why a place like Steak 38 feels that my business is not needed. I arrived with my boyfriend at 8 pm and walked up to a locked door! I knocked and was rudely told "WE'RE CLOSED!!!" Closed? But I have a reservation. It was 8:05 and my reservation was at 8PM. From behind the still locked door I said this to the gentleman inside and he yelled, "You're late, we're closed!" I have never in my life been treated like this. Certainly, he could of at least opened the door. This was even after I called at 7:23 pm to confirm the reservation! He could not have told me then?! He made me drive almost 40 minutes to tell me that they closed 5 minutes before I arrived. I could have not been more dissatisfied. Unbelievable. A place like that does not need my business. And the matre d' in the last review is, I'm sure, the same one that shouted at us. Save your money, time, and patience. Eat somewhere nicer....    [20 Jan 2004 14:25:58]

The Best Place for Great Steaks
This small, almost unnoticable restaurant is one of the best kept secrets in Delaware Valley dining, especially if you love red meat. The prices are not cheap, but are cheaper than most of the touristy high-end restaurants in Philadelphia, and the food is better. I almost always go for the Ribeye, charred on the outside but always a perfect medium on the inside. My wife prefers the "Filet Royale" which is not on the menu but usually offered as a special. It's a thick filet mignon topped with portabella mushrooms and huge chunks of lump crabmeat. We've never experienced bad service or an unpleasant maitre' d, but we know people who have. Our suggestion, make reservations early and be prompt (but still expect to wait for a little while) and enjoy a drink at the bar before being seated.    [13 Apr 2004 13:32:38]

Bring a full wallet
Very expensive, I thought I was dining in NY or Philly. We had nothing exceptional to warrant the inflated costs. The bar too was expensive, over $10 for a martini, the wait staff again was nothing exceptional nor was the crowded tiny dining room.    [22 Jun 2004 22:20:38]

Great Steak in an Average Joint
We went for the Steak and we weren't disappointed. The Filet was fabulous. The service and ambiance average to below. I didn't believe the front entrance was REALLY the front door. The bar and restaurant reminded me of a 1970's mob joint. The staff tried to be attentive but (as it appeared to me) after years of serving, they were just putting in their time and getting through the night. I would rather they didn't do tableside service when it seems to be the most boring thing in the world. Take it back to the kitchen. Bananas Foster was a nice ending. Pricey bar drinks. Overall,w hat do you expect from a fine dining restaurant attached to an Econolodge? I decided, as should you, to take it for what it is, sit back and enjoy the Steak on 38. Welcome to a taste of South Jersey!    [19 Jul 2004 09:57:32]
