A small but cozy Indian restaurant which features Northern Indian cuisine. The atmosphere here is rich in decor: dimly lit room and wall hangings make for an authentic experience. Food is inexpensive to moderately priced. Offers many choices for the vegetarian as well as meat dishes.

Northern Indian Done Right! This little restaurant is a hidden gem! You are first greeted by its unique Indian tapestries and cozy dim lights, and the soft sounds of classical Indian music.
Then the wonderful smell of spices hits you like a wave. The service is very friendly and helpful. And the food! The pakoras and samosas are delicious starters. I have only tried the vegetarian dishes (all of them!) But friends have guaranteed that the lamb and chicken entrees are wonderful as well. Portions are large -- always enough to bring some home! And the spices are always tailored to your taste. If you like your food mildly spiced - the chef is always accommodating.
My personal favorite is the saag panir -- a dish of pureed spinach with cream and spices and chunks of freshly made Indian cheese. All dishes are served with rice. And crispy papadam with several chutneys is served when you are seated.
The only gripe I have ever had with this place is that the tables are too small to accommodate all of the dishes brought out. But great food at reasonable prices served by a pleasant staff more than makes up for this! I have tried many other local Indian restaurants and none have ever compared to this one. I have brought all of my friends here at one point or another. A must try! []

Indian Food Neophyte My first Indian cuisine experience was at Star of India (SOI). Several experiments with other restaurants, including several in Edison and Iselin, and I still return there when I want excellent Indian food. SOI's chicken sagwala is my favorite dish. Not simply my favorite Indian dish, my favorite DISH! Their tandoori sampler is also excellent. [15 Jan 2002 12:51:43]

At Last... After living in the USA for 6 years, some very intense searches and testing at many different restaurants in NYC and New Jersey, we have finally come across an Indian Restaurant that compares very favorably with the ones we enjoy so much in the UK.
I love Chicken Dansaks, and although the Star of India only had Shrimp Dansak on the menu they accommodated my request for Chicken instead and it was truly fabulous.
Portions were huge and we took plenty home.
I personally could had done with a little more light to see the menu and the table was too small for the amount we ordered - on the plus side I do have enough left overs in the fridge for another entire meal for my husband and I. [25 Aug 2007 22:20:02]
